Topic: Zork Zero

Zork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zork distinguished itself in its genre as an especially rich game, in terms of both the quality of the storytelling and the sophistication of its text parser, which was not limited to simple verb-noun commands ("hit grue"), but understood full sentences ("hit the grue with the Elvish sword").
In the Zork games, the player is not limited to verb-noun commands, such as "take lamp", "open mailbox", and so forth.
Part of the reason for splitting Zork into three different games was that, unlike the PDP systems the original ran on, micros did not have enough memory and disk storage to handle the entirety of the original game.

 Zork
Zork, like the other Infocom games, distinguished itself in its genre as an especially rich text adventure, both in terms of the quality of the storytelling, as well as the sophistication (at the time) of its text parser.
Finally Infocom, a company started by the above people and others with the intention of producing adventure games brought out versions of Zork for most popular computers of the era, such as the Commodore 64, the Atari 8-bit family, and the IBM PC, in addition to the above.
When the game was finished the implementors called it Dungeon, but people went on calling it Zork, so the name stuck (not an unusual course of events for software and other high-tech products with entrenched "working titles").

 SPAG Game Reviews Z
Zork I is a particularly good example of this, where the player is apparently looting for looting's own sake, while Zork II sets the collection of treasures up as part of the plot (although you must discover this for yourself; at first, you are merely collecting them because you get points for having each one).
In a sense, the nature of the world of Zork III brings the person sitting at the keyboard into the game in a way that the Zork II player was not likely to feel, unless he or she was used to encountering wizards and unicorns.
Zork II feels much more polished than Zork I; the geography of the game is somewhat more coherent, there are fewer illogicalities, and the layout is less a series of puzzles than a set of locations that revolve -- literally -- around a central area.

 fUSION Anomaly. Zork
Zork Zero: The Revenge of Megaboz also attempted to sift through the previous ten years of the Zork games, and tie up all those loose ends and open questions that never seemed to have a concrete answer such as the origin of the white house with the boarded front door.
Beyond Zork also allowed the player to create their own male or female character, with that character being personally referred to in parts of the game.
At this time, the majority of home computers were unable to cope with running the whole Zork game, so a method to compress the game was required.

Amiga Reviews: Zork zero - The revenge of Megaboz
Zork Zero is a superb adventure, packed with problems of varying difficulty.
Written by Steve Meretzky, author of Planetfall, Stationfall, Sorcerer, Hitch Hiker’s Guide and the high-selling smutware game, Leather Goddesses, Zork Zero is an essential addition to the collection of any serious adventure player, and equally recommended as a first time adventure to those who wonder what all the fuss is about.
The landscape in Zork Zero is quite huge, set in the time before the ‘White House’ which is the familiar starting point in the originals.

MacGamer - Get In The Game
Players became so fascinated with Zork that people took the game into the literary genre, publishing Zork books with the same zeal as playing the Zork game.
The popularity of the original Zork titles stemmed from Infocom's ability to create a simple, text-based gameplay that made players feel like active characters in a completely engrossing fantasy book.
The best selling point of Zork Grand Inquisitor is the overall ambient feel which serves as a focal point for the game's sarastic, punny, cleverly stupid, dumb-wittingly intelligent edge where luscious graphics, top quality sound, and solid gameplay collide like three one-armed idiots in a ho-down.

The "Z" of Z-machine stands for Zork, Infocom's first adventure game.

With the large number of incompatible home computer systems in use at the time, this was an important advantage over using native code.
