Chess World Champions - William Steinitz
Steinitz went on to beat Anderssen at a tournament in 1868 at Aachen but Anderssen defeated Steinitz at a more important tournament in Baden-Baden in 1870.
Steinitz was the first chess player to gain money from his tournament and match victories but he did not make enough to retire comfortably.
Steinitz went against current practice by maintaining that a game could not be lost without the loser making a mistake.

 William Steinitz 1836
Steinitz wanted to move the game forward, and so his game philosophy takes on extra significance, because it really did impact the game of chess.
Steinitz achieved his goal of taking chess forward, allowing players to view it in a more sophisticated positional way.
Steinitz became a chess professional after this tournament.

Steinitz 1886 - 1894 - Kings of Chess - Chess History - World Chess Network
For long periods during his career, Steinitz eschewed tournament competition (from 1873 to 1882 and 1883 to 1894), and he succeeded in winning outright only one first-class tournament (Vienna, 1873).
Against Mikhail Tchigorin in game four of their second title match, Steinitz was willing to accept (and draw!) the following position:
He defeated Johann Zukertort in 1886, +10 -5 =5, in what is often called “the first official match” for the world title.

 US Chess History
Wilhelm Steinitz was one of the most influential chess players in the history of the game.
Most chess players know Wilhelm Steinitz as an Austrian player who became the first official world champion.
But few chess players know that Steinitz was an American (and proud of it!) during his championship years and his last years, and that he accordingly came to call himself William rather than Wilhelm.

Books & Literature : William Steinitz, Chess Champion: A Biography of the Bohemian C
The "rap" on Steinitz today - from my dealings with players on dozens (!!) of Internet chess servers - is that he was a boring player who could not play well.
If you want every chess game that Steinitz ever played, a good companion volume to this one is the collection of all his games, published by Sid Pickard of Dallas, TX.
The book is first a biography, and second a collection of about fifteen selected games which are annotated in appropriate detail by Grandmaster Soltiz.

Soltis not only annotates the games well, he also does not forget abut the historical significance of the propounded theories exemplified by Steinitz' play.
American GM Andy Soltis then annotates fifteen Steinitz games, which is followed by a short but interesting piece by David Hooper, "The Theory of Steinitz." This book is a labor of love by a distant relative of the great world champion and theorist.

Steinitz resigned from the American Chess Editors' Association and sarcastically referred to Loyd as the "four-fifths treasurer of the association." Loyd fought back, and the New York chess club in effect exonerated Loyd and reproved Steinitz in a divided vote.
Steinitz adds the hopeful note: " We trust that the final rules of the association will not limit the powers and scope of action of the institution, and will enable the society to be prime movers in many chess matters of general interest."
In Steinitz's The International Chess Magazine, September 1885 issue, is found this historic notice: "The novel and meritorious idea of establishing an American Chess Editors' Association has been for some time agitated chiefly through the initiative of the gentleman who first proposed to organize such an institution, Mr.
