Basically, Jorune is a neat setting designed for a game, while Tekumel is a neat setting with a game designed for it.
Tekumel just seems too varied to be encompassed in a class-based system, unless they are going for a more "class-as-archetype" approach.
People are very excited about the new game because while Tekumel is a beautiful setting, the rules support for it has been less than perfect.

The answer is that there have been two novels, as well as a tremendous amount of gaming and other background material, set in Tekumel.

One friend of mine was known for falling asleep during our late-night Tekumel games in years past, so she always made characters who were devotees of Dra.
He is the closest thing to a "mystical" deity that Tekueml has, but most players don't find him attractive because his worshippers are known for not caring about anything and detatching from the world.

Tekumel has spawned three professionally-published roleplaying games over the course of the years ("Empire of the Petal Throne", "Swords and Glory" and "Gardasiyal: Adventures in Tekumel"), as well as fan-produced rules ("Tirikelu" and others).
A brand-new roleplaying game set in Tekumel is due to be published in March of 2005 by Guardians of Order, currently titled "Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne".
Barker has also written 5 novels set in the world of Tekumel; "Man of Gold" and "Flamesong" were published in the 1980s by Daw Books and will be re-released in 2004.

For example, some game terms were derived from the language of Jorune, such as the use of "Sholari" ("master") for the gamemaster.
While Jorune had many original and quite different ideas in its setting (compared to the role-playing games of its day) it was often perceived as a poor man's Tekumel due to a number of similarities.
These included the idea of human's colonising a distant planet and subsequently losing contact with the rest of humanity (a dimensional rift in Tekumel's case, civil war in Jorune's) leading to the regression of the colonist's society and war against the planet's native inhabitants.

Tekumel is by far the most detailed role playing background available.
At the moment (19th Feb '01) the report represents about a fifth of the information in the past mailings and this total represents a very small fraction of the published information on the subject of Tekumel and the Empire of The Petal Throne, where much of the action is set.
All the text in the report is by Professor Barker himself and has been edited into this form by me with a few additional words here and there to make it read like a document rather than a series of answers to questions (which is what most of was).

The game is written so that those new to the world of Tekumel can begin to get the rich flavor of M.A. Barker's alien world and civilization from the get go.
The aspect of the game I like the best is the fact that you can build every aspect of your character from the ground up- his stats, advantages and dissadvantages, equipment and even some of his magic items.
Kind of wish we'd get a new generation of minis sculpts while we're at it, but I'm not holding my breath onb that one.
