Topic: Stranger (Myst)

Myst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though Myst was an extremely popular and commercially succesful game it was also intensively criticised, mostly around the lack of "action" in the game, leading some to claim the game is boring (a typical review of this type describes the game as a "slide-show").
Myst was the spark for a new genre, the first-person adventure-puzzle game.
Once traveling through the Ages of Myst, Selenitic, Stoneship, Mechanical, and Channelwood, the player would return to the starting point of the game, Myst Island, with all the information necessary to complete the game.

Stranger (Myst) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Uru, the Stranger does not appear, as the player character ideally represents the actual person who is playing the game.
The Stranger is how the player character of the Myst series of games is known when discussing the history of Myst canon.
Whether the Stranger ever existed as a 'historical' person of the Myst Universe, or was intended as just an abstraction of the games' players, it's doubtful that we will learn anything more about him in the future.

Stranger (Myst) -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
Whatever the Stranger's identity as a 'historical' person of the Myst Universe and Atrus' life as a friend might be, it is most likely a simple blank, irrelevant in participation to the history, which allows any player to play the games without having to "play" a character.
In the games, his role is assumed by the player, and as such the games are seen from the Stranger's perspective.
It is notable that in the Myst games any dialogue is absent, so we don't know whether the game characters asked the Stranger questions about his origin or what reply he might have made.

 2.08: Guerrillas in the Myst
Myst is designed to be played in 40 hours by the "average" first-time player.
The game of Myst starts on a place called Myst Island.
Test groups of players were finding the beginning of the game too difficult, so the entire superstructure of extra initial hints was added.

 Riven
It is widely regarded by players of Myst and other adventure games to be the most difficult game in the Myst franchise.
Unlike Myst, the point of the game is not to travel to Ages, solve puzzles, return to the hub and then go on.
Riven is also the name of the Age in which the majority of the game Riven is spent.

 Myst IV: Revelation - Information
Myst IV is the first game for PC released exclusively on a DVD-ROM format: a multiple CD-ROM version was not made.
As in other Myst games, the player will travel to other worlds ('Ages').
There is also a lot more of it - over 70 minutes, and, like a handful of scenes in Myst III, the game usually allows players to look around and sometimes interact with the video while it is playing.

MacGamer - Get In The Game
The only place where it doesn't work is the save dialog boxes, but as you only see those when you quit or towards the end of the game, it's not a big deal to maneuver the mouse into the right position.
The story is told mainly through the words of Saavedro, either through video players he's reprogrammed throughout the game, or through the pages of his journal, which are scattered throughout the worlds for you to pick up.
I guess I like it, overall, but I like to have a game to gnaw at over time, and I'm slightly disappointed that Myst 3 wasn't it.

 Game Informer Online
Later on in the game you eventually learn more about what’s motivating the Stranger, but the game does a good job of only letting you in on what it wants you to know.
While the Stranger begins the game seemingly a one trick pony, he eventually becomes the embodiment of that classic cowboy persona; a man trying to do the right thing by doing the wrong thing.
Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath, which quite simply is the most unique Oddworld game yet.

Adventure Gamers : Myst V: End of Ages
So once again you reprise your role as the philanthropic "stranger." To simplify what follows in the game, I will boil down the basic premise in EoA: you are chosen to accomplish tasks in four Ages and ultimately unlock the Tablet, resulting in the end of your journey and the game.
In Myst V: End of Ages, this reviewer feels an overwhelming gratitude that Rand Miller and his group have successfully weaved a cohesive pattern from a historically convoluted skein of story arcs, and all within a game that any beginner could pick up without scratching their head in confusion.
Along with Cyan's welcomed return to the fold, word that the new title would also be the last Myst game created great anticipation, but the fact that it has arrived so quickly may give pause to Myst aficionados.

Myst for Pocket PC- PDA Game Reviews - Mobile Tech Review
The sounds in Myst play a large role in the game as clues, but they also enhance the overall gameplay experience.
Overall, the sound in Myst is spectacular, and is another one of the best features in the game.
The features that made Myst so popular, such as the stunning graphics, great use of sound, difficult puzzles, and great storyline are still contained in the Pocket PC version of the game as well.

Myst & URU Obsession Forums -> IGN's Revelation Preview
May 12, 2004 - Myst remains one of the best selling games of all times as does its egregiously difficult sequel Riven.
Thankfully, Riven thought these guys a valuable lesson that people actually like to be able to finish their games eventually without losing hair or punching several holes in their walls from frustration.

MacGamer - Get In The Game
For those of us old-timers, Myst is an old standby; a classic of gaming that will never die, up there in the ranks with Doom and Civilization.
Yet another Myst trademark is the incredible sound and music each game has.
Cyan agreed, and so today we have the game known as Myst 3.

The Myst games are supposed to be based on Catherine's journal which was found by Zandi's father when he first discovered D'ni back in the 80's.
This means that in the first three games you are playing as yourself as the Stranger.
Therefore, you could have played Myst, Riven, and Exile before physically going down and exploring true ages and the ancient city itself.

According to Cyan's website, their adventure game Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, the latest installment in the immensely popular Myst series, took over 200 individuals to program, design, write, and market.
The point-and-click type of adventure games, known for requiring refined puzzle-solving skills and an acceptance of one's inner kleptomaniac, have been especially popular for the do-it-yourself-crowd.

Heinlein loved to pontificate through the mouths of his characters, so modern readers must be willing to overlook the occasional sour note ("Nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's partly her fault.").
Stranger really marks a huge turning point in Heinlein's career.
A great many people have read Heinlein's STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND since it was first published in 1961--but while almost everyone enjoys the story, very few seem to actually get the point or indeed even understand what the novel is.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Sanctifying Grace
In other words without the aid of other factors, sanctifying grace in itself possesses the power to effect the destruction of sin and the interior sanctification of the soul to be justified.
The real nature of sanctifying grace is, by reason of its direct invisibility, veiled in mystery, so that we can learn its nature better by a study of its formal operations in the soul than by a study of the grace itself.
Applying these conditions to the adoption of man by God, we find that God's adoption exceeds man's in every point, for the sinner is not merely a stranger to God but is as one who has cast off His friendship and become an enemy.
