Topic: Stalemate

Stalemate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stalemate is a situation in chess where the player whose turn it is to move has no legal moves but is not in check.
However, in certain chess variants, such as suicide chess, stalemate is not necessarily a draw, and is deemed a win for either (a) the player with fewer pieces (a draw results if the players have the same number of pieces) or (b) the stalemated player.
Stalemate is an important factor in the endgame - the set-up in the top-right of this diagram, for example, quite frequently occurs in play, and the position in the bottom-left is an example of a pawn being worth as much as a queen.

 Chess: Stalemate
Before reading this topic, I though that a stalemate means that the player who can't move lose automatically the game.
I was under the illusion that stalemate was after a player looses all of rooks, queen, bishops, and knights, there is a certain number of moves before a stalemate.
So, it's a pleasure seeing the way that great masters use to stalemate to draw a game in which their probabilities to win are obviously lesser than the opponnents' ones.

 Question regarding stalemate
There is no such rule stating that if one player has only his King remaining the other player has only 8 moves to check mate him or it is a stalemate.
The rules of Chess state that if "within the last 50 consecutive moves have been made by each player without the movement of any Pawn and without the capture of any piece, the game is drawn, upon a correct claim by the player having the move."
If a player has enough pieces to perform a mate, he can take as many as 50 consecutive moves to mate the opponent's King.
