Re: Mega Reviews: Sonic Mega Collection (56k) - Reviews - Nintendo NSider Forums
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 allowed you to play two player in the game, and keeping the tradition of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, this game featured a lot of fast and furious gameplay with tons of loops and rings.
Although you cannot play two player, Sonic the Hedgehog has a lot of enjoyment, and is one of my favorite games in the series.
Sonic and Knuckles is very similar to the previous games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, except it introduces a new character that you can control, Knuckles the Echidna.

The Sonic games retain this playability in all their glory, and also prove that 2D games are just as fun as they always used to be, with gameplay that is fast paced and very stylish.
Sonic Mega Collection Plus is basically the same as its Gamecube counterpart only with some added features and more games to boot.
The game also includes six Game Gear games from the Sonic world, some of these games are rather weird or just seem like novelties, but diehard Sonic fans will be pleased to see that they are included.

Mega Collection translates the controls so each game is intuitive to play.
While most titles that are collections of old games feel as if they're squeezing new life from long dormant games, Sonic Mega Collection is more like a nostalgic review.
The title offers a solid collection and fun classic gameplay, but more Sonic games would have made the collection even better.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus PS2/Xbox Review - CGN
The Sonic games all play reasonably similar to each other.
The game had what could definitely be considered a primitive physics system, allowing Sonic to bounce and float in the exact same way a five foot tall talking blue hedgehog would in real life.
Before we begin, let me reiterate, this is a collection of the pre-Saturn Sonic games, except for the best one.

Something this simple may work in say, a handheld format where gaming on the move is always best in short blasts…but when I sit down in front of my TV for a spot of gaming I want something to really sink my teeth into, the Sonic games just don't do that.
This is still pretty good fun in two player, a game which sees you matching coloured beans in a bizarre mix of Tetris and Bust-a-Move.
It is even more off-putting to have to pay for this when Nintendo give away Ocarina of Time with Wind Waker…a game of undeniable quality.

Anybody who remembers Sonic's 16-bit outings the way we do will love playing through them again and watching the series progress from its radically inventive beginnings through to the blisteringly speedy latter stages, picking up chargeable spin dash moves and layers and layers of graphical detail on the way.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus PS2 Review
Obviously not every game on this disk is going to score a winner with every player and some Sonic games are renowned for being bad but nobody can grumble about what is on offer here.
As soon as the game starts up you get sent hurtling down memory lane with the opening "SEGA" title screen, the game then allows you to choose your next move from a menu pretty generous on options.
Obviously when you look at it now it appears to be pretty ugly but once you get used to the old style again you will fail to notice how blurry, blocky and chunky the games look and instead concentrate on the gameplay, which can only be a good thing, right?

As much as I would like to see some better original content on the GameCube, it's also great to be able to have Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 plus a bunch of other Genesis games for just $20.
And now, it's excellent to revisit those classic games, with the great graphics, solid control, speedy gameplay and cool music all still there, though obviously dated.

ITS SEEMS THAT THIS is the year for re-releases with many game developers digging deep into their bag of past glories, smarting up the packaging and tossing them into the market with the hope of cashing in on the craze for game memorabilia.
Once you get into the games, however, you will be consumed by the challenge and the frantic gameplay that is the style of the Sonic series.
Sure, it was a platform game, but the combination of an immediately likeable character and insanely quick gameplay struck a chord with players.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus - Kotaku
This is a collection of the older Sonic games both for Genesis and the portable Game Gear, and while it’s called a Mega Collection+, it does not include Sonic CD, a game for the Genesis’ CD-ROM add-on, nor does it include Knuckles Chaotix, a game for the Genesis’ 32X add-on.
Also, for some reason, you have to actually unlock some of the games as you play, and it’s probably the rarer ones you’ve never played before and were buying the collection to try.
For them, you may have to wait for the Mega Collection + Ultra.
