The Atari 2600, released in 1977, is the first successful video game console to use plug-in cartridges instead of having one or more games built in.
Thus, the Atari 2600 was the console which made the plug-in concept popular among the game playing public.
Atari suffered from an image problem when a company named Mystique produced a number of pornographic games for the 2600.

RealSports Volleyball was the best 2600 volleyball game, and not just because it was the only 2600 volleyball game.
The 2600 wasn't the first home game console, but it was the first one to achieve real popularity.
Still on the very-old-school-classics thread, there's Breakout, and Asteroids, which was the first Atari 2600 game to offer four mighty kilobytes of game code.

 ClassicGaming.com - The Museum: Atari 2600
Atari wasn't very happy about having to deal with this new competition (as Atari was the sole producer of VCS games prior to Activision's formation), and at the time they didn't realize that this was the beginning of the end of their software dominance.
The Atari 5200 Supersystem was named for its part number in the Atari catalog, CX5200.
The failure of the 5200 was partly due to its inability to play 2600 games, as well as its shoddy controllers.

Solaris is an almost-first-person game of interstellar liberation.

 Solaris - Digital Press Online
Considered by many to be the best-looking game ever released for the Atari 2600, Solaris is a complex and challenging game that offers hours of gameplay.
It can sometimes be frustrating to go through the maze of quadrants, but it makes the game as challenging as a puzzle, while retaining the qualities of an action game.
Jack Tramiel has realized that there could still be some money to be milked out of the Atari 2600, and Atari Corp. released its redesigned 2600 console, now called the 2600 Jr., alongside the Atari 7800.

AGH Atari 2600 Review -- Thrust
Thrust's graphics are standard first-generation 2600 fare, but considering the complicated game logic and AI necessary for proper gameplay, it's more than adequate.
German Atari fan Thomas Jentzsch has now taken a crack at introducing Thrust's goodness to 2600 players, and he does not disappoint.
To Commodore 64 aficionados, the game Thrust will no doubt evoke some fond memories of what is considered by many as one of the best variations of the classic Atari arcade game Gravitar.

Even though better games were eventually made for the Atari 2600, both Pac-Man and E.T. left their mark on the video gaming world.
As the early 1980's continued, games for the Atari 2600 begain to look cheap and fake, a good example being Pac-Man, and E.T. Both games were made quick, leaving gamers with lack luster graphics and sound.
