Topic: The Score

 Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Score
There are certain other conventions about how scores are arranged, one of which is that higher-pitched instruments or voices are usually placed higher on the page than lower-pitched parts.
To make sure that all the parts “line up” with one another in time and are visually coordinated on the page, each page of score is also divided by vertical lines, bar lines, that run the length of the page straight down through all the staves and divide the music into measures.
The individual performers in a multipart piece, on the other hand, whether instrumentalists or singers, rarely use scores to perform.

 The Score
Watching the cast of The Score interact with each other is more than enough reason to watch this movie.
He is calm, collected, and in complete control of the situation, even when things go awry.
The Score opens with De Niro in the middle of a job, carefully taking apart a safe.

 Amazon.com: DVD: The Score (2001)
While I'm not going to tout THE SCORE as an Oscar-worthy masterpiece, it is certainly one of the best "heist" films that I have seen in a long time.
To be sure, THE SCORE is not without technology, but what makes this film "pop" is the fact that we are drawn into the plot by De Niro, Brando, and the absolutely fantastic performance of Norton.
The Score isn't anything new, and there isn't a single surprise, but if you're into this sort of thing you do respond to its polished familiarity.

The Popkorn Junkie :: The Score
Overall, “The Score” is a movie with sub par directing and an average story line.
The rest of the scenery is pretty drab due to the fact that the score involves breaking into a Canadian customs house.
Even though I could point out a dozen or so flaws in the plot, I enjoyed Score very much.

 Amazon.ca: DVD: The Score (Widescreen)
But here's where "The Score" scores its points: it takes a well-known genre and whips it into shape with a heightened energy and intensity to match its smarts, building the suspense layer by layer as our characters get closer to attaining the scepter.
In that sense, The Score is a letdown, though if you're a fan of these great actors, you'll still have a good time watching it (be warned though - Brando doesn't appear all that often and usually he's in some dim, shadowy environment...)
But that's just the icing in the cake, because the three actors are the main reason to see "The Score".

 The Score
Well, after succumbing to peer pressure and picking up their latest effort, The Score, all I can say is this: Lauryn Hill is the bomb, she's easily one of the best female hiphop voices out there (with an appropriate nod to MeShell NdegeOcello) and a sight better than almost all of the male voices, too.
Well, try "The Score", "How Many Mics", "Cowboys", "The Mask" and even "Killing Me Softly".
The point is, you should give this one a try.

 Filmtracks: The Score (Howard Shore)
The Score: (Howard Shore) "Cult scorer." Howard Shore has, over the years, acquired just that title simply because of the kinds of films he chooses to score.
If you try to pay too much attention to the score, it could easily become monotonous after twenty minutes.
But his scores always have a gritty edge to them, and The Score is a perfect example of that.

Running up the score - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The one exception to this general rule occurs in the NFL when teams attempting to make the playoffs are tied in the standings and have no other deciding factors, such as games against common opponents.
After the game, punches were thrown between the two teams.
Running up the score is a term used in sports, although mostly in high school and college football (American), to describe a team scoring more points than necessary just for the sake of scoring more points.

 KCRW: The Score
On "The Score," I hope to tell poignantly inspirational stories, cover the broad spectrum of characters who play parts in the sports world and lift listeners to feel a passion for sports, as I do.
I don’t know how to say it any more clearly than that.
The din has become so loud and so steady that I, for one, am thirsting for the poetry, the sociology, the philosophy of sports.

A full score is one such as an orchestral conductor uses, in which each part is on a separate staff, while in a condensed score two or more parts are written on a single staff.
Early polyphony was notated in score until the early 13th cent., when choir books, in which the parts were written out separately one after another, came into use.
With the rise of opera music around the beginning of the 17th cent., the modern score came into being, with bar lines scored from top to bottom through all the staffs.

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment "The Score"
In "The Score" he seems to be considering each move so thoroughly there doesn't appear to be anything that could force him to make a stupid move; you get the feeling that giving in to greed or temptation would, for this man, amount to violation of dignity.
The trouble is that that chic urban comfort leaches into every corner of "The Score." The movie is so determinedly low-key that after a while it sits on the screen like a layout from Architectural Digest.
"The Score" manages to tell the story of a high-tech heist with only one muffled explosion and minimal gunplay.

I was going to title this review, The Score packs no Heat, which I quickly vetoed, because if I was going to try to be punny, and bad punny at that, I should try to use the word “score” in the title.
He longs to score the last big job, to retire to his classy Montreal hometown and hip New York style jazz club and into the arms of Diane, played by Angela Bassett.
The Score tried to differentiate in mood between the relaxed daily routine of Nick’s civilian life, and the slickness of his jazz club and well furnished home and his professional life, but achieves only some indeterminate fuzzyness.

Five million sold, three hit singles – The Score indeed.
But with the intoxicating sway of the grooves, and the dynamic zigzagging between tough chatter and Hill's striking vocal breaks, The Score plays better as the mix tape of your dreams.
And that's more than enough to compensate for a trip-up like Hill's bizarre boast and off-color toast to one of America's great black female singers in "Ready or Not": "So while you be imitating Al Capone/I be Nina Simone/And defecate on your microphone." There had to be a better way to put it.

“The film is a great combination of a musical score by Howard Shore, the effects design and mixing, and the dialog mixing,” Dichter says.
Though much of The Score takes place inside, the few street scenes in the film enabled Dichter to enact his dialog cleaning philosophy, which boils down to less is more.

The Score. Movie Review @ Hollywood.com - The best online source for movie reviews.
Given that The Score's motto seems to have been "been there, stole that," it's hard to imagine why it would interest the likes of De Niro, Norton and Brando.
Almost as a complete rejection of his past achievements, Oz keeps The Score as po-faced and static as possible.
Now The Score pits Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Marlon Brando against each another, and the result is even less satisfying.

 The Score
With the setup and the jazzy backdrop that would have been right up Eastwood's alley, the film certainly doesn't reinvent the genre.
But then who needs a body count and explosions when you've got the dramatic firepower provided by the likes of De Niro, Norton and a particularly playful Brando -- in the same scenes, no less -- who respectfully give one another room to strut their stuff?
While the less frantic pace won't be a selling point for teenagers, adults looking for a welcome respite from all the summer blockbuster bombast -- there isn't a single talking animal to be found here -- will ensure that the crisply acted Paramount release scores some impressive midseason numbers.

 MAKING THE SCORE
Although Holmes was primarily spinning acid house and techno back then, he aspired to create music comparable to the soundtrack scores of Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, and Roy Budd.
Director Steven Soderbergh hired him to write the score and act as musical director for Out of Sight.
These influences came to the fore on Holmes's first album, This Film's Crap, Let's Slash the Seats, in which Foley sound effects coexist alongside grooves that could accompany a chase scene as easily as they could work on a dance floor.
