Player character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A player character or playable character (PC) is a fictional character in a game who is controlled or controllable by the player.
In computer role-playing games, player characters and playable characters are also known as avatars, and almost always serve as the game's protagonist.
Contrast with a non-player character (NPC), a character controlled by the gamemaster or, in the case of games that do not use gamemasters, by the game itself.

Non-player character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term non-player character is also used in computer role-playing games to describe entities not under the direct control of players.
In the Champions game (and related games using the Hero System), a character may have a DNPC, or "dependent non-player character." This is a character controlled by the GM, but for which the player character is responsible in some way, and who may be put in harm's way by the PC's choices.
A non-player character or non-playable character (NPC) is a character in a role-playing game whose actions are determined by the gamemaster.

Gamasutra - Features - "Player Character Concepts" [11.08.99]
More specifically, a game character is a vehicle for playing the game; the means through which the game shows the player the game-world's responses to his presence.
The character's mechanical abilities and his fictional background were both relevant to the player's enjoyment of the game - the former to game play and puzzles, the latter to imagination and story immersion.
The fact that the player was a space marine and that someone had opened a portal to hell was in many ways less relevant than the game's excellent game-play elements.

 single player: Information From Answers.com
A "single player game" usually implies a game where this mode is the only or main option, while "single player mode" usually refers to the single player mode of a game where a multiplayer mode also exists.
The vast majority of console games and arcade games are designed so that they can be played by a single player; although many of these games have modes that allow two or more players to play (not necessarily simultaneously), very few actually require more than one player for the game to be played.
In card games, solitaire is the name given to single player games.

Blog, Jvstin Style: Wish 78: Two Characters, One Player
Having a player with two characters in a scene can be a logistical problem, as other players can feel overwhelmed with a player with two outputs.
In Ars Magica, for example, players are expected to play a troupe of characters at different social levels, it is an integral part of the game by design.
Although it is a game, and a collaborative one at that, it can be daunting to deal with an active, aggressive player who has an extra set of hands in a scene, be it political, social,or a combat.
