Game Studies - Play Dead: Genre and Affect in Silent Hill and Planescape Torment
Planescape Torment is so encyclopaedic that the parameters of the game, its aims and its player's goals, remain dispersed or vague.
In Planescape Torment a player does not have to arrive at any particular location to save their game, and pausing a game in order to sort out a strategy, mid-confrontation, is par for the course.
Planescape Torment is more dynamic and less static than Silent Hill because of its greater number of goals and quests, and the fact that only some of them are compulsory, as well as due to the complexity of the teams' inventory, mutating avatars and all the possible dialogue options.

Destroy All Monsters - Monte Cook on Planescape
Chris, the lead designer of Torment is also a huge Planescape fan and really understood what the paper version of the game was trying to do, and translated it into a computer game brilliantly.
Planescape seems to have taken these ideas and really run with them, offering players the chance to meet the diety of their choice face-to-face.
But don't expect all the "trappings" of Planescape to go away as much as you might think.

Amazon.com: Computer & Video Games: Planescape: Torment
Gamers overwhelmed by detailed role-playing games will find Planescape: Torment easier to grasp; players can freely switch between three different character classes (Fighter, Mage, Thief) for The Nameless One as the game progresses, and learning the combat and magic system--with a simple point-and-click interface--takes only a few minutes.
In Planescape: Torment, you play a nameless, scarred, immortal on a quest to discover his past, his identity, and his role in the conflict over the nature of reality.
The brilliant role-playing and adventure game focuses on the "Planescape" campaign setting of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons game, and combines the best elements of Interplay's phenomenally successful Baldur's Gate with an enthralling story line, well-written dialogue, and beautiful artwork and graphics.

Planescape: Torment for PC Review - PC Planescape: Torment Review
Torment abandons the high-fantasy styling of most RPGs and instead uses the Planescape license's unique interpretation of familiar fantasy archetypes, which lends the game a wholly original appearance that defies expectations for fantasy and science fiction artwork.
In Torment, you play as a nameless character who cannot die and cannot remember his past, and in uncovering his origin, you'll experience one of the year's most fascinating games.
Torment is a traditional role-playing game with an uncommonly detailed story and first-rate graphics and sound.

The Bioware Infinity Engine will also be behind the latest AD&D role playing game from the Black Isle team, Planescape: Torment.
Planescape does have some minor tweaks to the engine from the one in Baldur's Gate, but the setting is the main aspect which sets itself apart from its predecessor.
Planescape is a whole different world than the one that Baldur's Gate was set in.

The best thing about Planescape: Torment is its amazing storyline, and you don't really get into it much if you just mindlessly follow the walkthrough step by step.
He's a decent character really, but missile weapons aren't that advantageous in Planescape: Torment because of the zoomed-in view and limited sight.
Also, don't forget that you should try and complete the game on your own first.

Three names come to mind for this gamer: Fallout 1&2, Planescape Torment, and Baldur's Gate 2; the latest of these three being BG2.
After thinking long and hard, I cannot think of a single CRPG to top those 3 (Or 4, if you're counting.) Why is that?

Planescape: Torment is a computer role-playing game (CRPG) which takes place in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Planescape campaign setting, released in 1999.
Planescape: Torment differs from similar CRPGs like those in the Baldur's Gate series by placing an emphasis on conversation and storyline, as opposed to an emphasis on combat.

GameOver - Planescape: Torment (c) Interplay
Planescape: Torment is set (perhaps, unexpectedly) in the Planescape realm of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons universe.
One thing that differs Torment from the likes of BG is the status of the player in the world.
For those of you unfamiliar with it, Planescape is the realm of AD&D which is centered more around the mind aspect rather than the hack-and-slash aspect.

Torment's dialogue often lets you choose to make promises, bluff, or play dumb; the game lets you perceive small details if your character is intelligent, understand philosophical implications if he's wise, and intimidate or charm if he's strong or charismatic.
Torment's scenery is more intricately detailed than the scenery in Baldur's Gate because of the close perspective, and much like its characters, the scenery looks good and looks different from what you're used to.
