Talk:Origins of chess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The main claim for an Egyptian origin of chess is the ancient image found in the tomb of Egyptian Queen Nefertari (1295-1255 BC) which shows her reaching over what appears to be a game of 10 playing pieces on a 4 x 7 board design.
Considering that Xiàngqí (or Chinese chess or elephant chess) evolved from an ancient Chinese game called Liubo, invented around 1500 BC, Chaturanga would obviously be a variant of these older Chinese games.
However, the Knossos board likely represents a race-like game rather than a battle game, and Liubo, though a battle game, was played with dice.

 Varying Chess
In orthodox Chess, if a player has no legal move and his king is not in check, the game is a draw.
Castling in orthodox Chess allows the player a chance to build a shelter for the king, but in Ur chess not only is there no castling, the pawns are moved forward, leaving a huge space behind them, which is hard to defend.
These three rules together constituted what I called "Renormalized Chess." But I never played it; it struck me as a half-measure—not enough of a different game to constitute a "real" chess variant.

In some sense chess may be looked at as a 'game type' rather than a type of game, the modern form being an amalgamation of activities and thought which may not relate to 'our' chess in a narrow and linear sense.
He includes such characteristics as a board game; between two players; on a board with a rectangular pattern; with both parties having an equal set of pieces which are hierarchically and identifiably marked by name, design, power of move, and importance for the game; and so on.
Many games besides Western chess are discussed, both modern (Go, Shogi, Xiangqui, Pachisi, etc.) and ancient (the Roman ludus latrunculorum, the Greek poleis and petteia, the Chinese liubo, the Byzantine zatrikion and others).

"FOR LOVE OF THE GAME " - Janet Newton
While it is possible that, in a moment of epiphany, the game of chess emerged, full-blown in a form recognizable to us as such, it is more prudent although far less exciting to assume, rather, that the idea of chess evolved out of one or more prior games played by people for thousands of years.
In so doing, however, the supporters of "Chess is War" must ignore the history of other preceding board games which, as archaeological evidence demonstrates, were invented or instigated as a way to practice divination and provide a method, as it were, to "grow closer to one's God".
And so, many games scholars around the world are busy trying to get to the root of the invention of chess, the war game.
