Topic: Old school gamer

Video game player - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This type of gamer is most often found playing games of the fighting game and first person shooter genres.
Import gamers, as the name implies, purchase video games from overseas countries (this is usually done with Japanese games, as most games are originally made in Japan, though it is not uncommon for European gamers to purchase games that were released in North America due to the increased selection of English-language titles).
A video game player who plays video games as a regular hobby or routine almost everyday is referred to as a full-time or hardcore gamer, and one who does not play them that often is referred to as a part-time gamer.

Abandonware article - Abandonware computer software copyright Popular abandonware Enforcement - What-Means.com
The most common abandonware is old video games, either computer games or older video game console or arcade games that are played through emulation.
Many people think that various older games are more fun than newer games (hence old school gamers), in part because their designers had to concentrate on game play features other than graphics, so these games have gained a second life by being distributed through the Internet.
The following games have been placed in the public domain by their copyright holders for various reasons, most notably as publicity for a forthcoming sequal or compilation release.

The Pikachu Tamer's Domain in The Wired
I recognize that there are merits to both schools of gaming and I can and will appreciate a new-school game if it's fun.
I can't speak for all old-school gamers, but I know that one of the major points of frustration that gamers like myself have with new-school games is that for much of the "game", we feel like we're just watching instead of actually playing.
In contrast, new-school side quests are typically revealed to the gamer within the context of the main storyline, and so everyone who plays knows where to go and what to do.

 Fan translation
Many video game players, hence "old school" gamers, are responsible for the popularity of console emulation, because those video game players think that the abandonware video games are more amusing than the video games that are still on the market.
While the translations themselves - which are distributed without the games - are probably legal, in order to use them, you must possess a ROM of the game, and run the game on an emulator.
Many video games, as well as animes, are marketed exclusively in Japan, for example; the text encoded in the ROM images of these Japan-only games can be translated to English or another language, for the enjoyment of English-speaking players and players who speak neither Japanese nor English.

There are quite a few new school RPGamers like yourself, who liked the game for the plot and characters and whatnot, but not a lot.
But, I always just loved the cute little ones from old school games; this is personal taste, not a widespread opinion.
How ridiculous is it, that new games will bash old when they've barely played the old games?
