In 1985, one of Nobuo's friends, who was working at a video game company called Squaresoft asked Nobuo if he wanted to write music for some of their video games and like we all know, we know what came after that.
When Nobuo turned 22, he joined many amteur-bands as a keyboard player, but he discovered that he love writing music more then playing, so he decided to pursuit a career as a composer and send out many demo-tapes to many companies.
Nobuo started playing the piano at the age of 12 and has been formerly taught.

Animefringe: March 2005 - Specials - Dear Friends: The Music of Nobuo Uematsu
Uematsu introduced many of us to the potential power of video game music long before many of us were old enough to drive.
Though these games were known for their engaging characters, excellent visuals and addictive plots, Uematsu’s music was just as much of a drawing point to the titles as any other element going into their production.
If you ever see Nobuo Uematsu in person, you wouldn’t think that such a polite, calm, and generally normal looking fellow could be the most popular composer in the history of the game industry.

 Innovators - Nobuo Uematsu
Uematsu, who composed the music for the popular Final Fantasy series (the games, not the movie), is also winning a substantial U.S. following — drawing raves from gaming magazines and teens learning to play his songs.
Uematsu, a self-taught guitarist and keyboardist, writes while playing test versions of each game, getting "constant feedback" from the development team.
In Japan several composers, including Mamoru Samuragoch (Onimusha) and Yoko Shimomura (Legend of Mana), have won acclaim for writing big-screen-quality music for small-screen games.

Uematsu took advantage of this by introducing what can only be described as "whacky" - the battle music played during Laguna Loire's flashback sequences.
I really just want to let you know that Uematsu has this little unique feature: next time you play any of these games, perhaps you'll take the time to pay attention to the music in a way other than most gamers and reviewers do.
It's a far cry to say so, but Uematsu may have been one of the most influential people when it comes to the huge, orchestrated masterpieces you see in gaming today.

GameSpy: Interview with the Maestro: Nobuo Uematsu
Uematsu noted that the music in current games is often akin to that of movies, with static fanfares and cues to punctuate certain points, pre-planned and pre-scripted.
Speaking of the West, Uematsu was asked if there were any Western game music composers he enjoyed, and, predictably, he said that he didn't really play Western games.
He thinks that games, being an interactive medium, should employ new, somehow different techniques in their music.
