MIDI Maze was the true introduction of the networked First Person Shooter, and helped to inspire games like Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM.
The Atari user group Milatari use to host the MIDI Maze event at Milwaukee's GenCon roleplaying gaming event in the late 80's, and hundreds of attendees would participate.
Players moved their character, a large smiley face around the maze in search of the other players.

 Lost Levels Online
They don't bother to mention that MIDI Maze was the first 3D multiplayer shooter in video game history.
They fail to inform you that the game's creators later retooled MIDI Maze into Faceball 2000, a succesful entry into the Game Boy's library.
They do not explain that a cult following exists even today, all over the world, and that its fans are so dedicated to the game that modern editing utilities and Windows upgrades have been created.

 Midimaze Utilities
MidiMaze II is still played in many places, but the freeware version will only run the original mazes that it shipped with.
MidiMaze and MidiMaze II are programs that were written for the Atari ST a number of years ago.
You'll need to run them through MMUTIL32 to make them work in the freeware version of MidiMaze II.

There was a community-wide reading of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein going on, which I thought was a cool thing to do.

Like I said, I played quite a bit of MIDI Maze, back in the day; we had groups of up to about 10 folks deathmatching at once.
And then, in the midst of all this, we come across a couple of pieces that she'd done for the manual for a game called MIDI Maze.
The game was released quite a while ago, in 1987.

This was the first multi player game I am aware of that allowed up to 16 people to play.
Game play was simple in the extreme - each player is a Pac-man like figure, that shoots forwards, and moves around a simple maze.
The 'midi' in the name refers to the music instrument connections that were used to link the machines together, that came as standard on the Atari ST.

Don't forget "Midi Maze", the multiplayer maze game you could play by connecting a bunch of Atari ST's in a MIDI daisy-chain (no little box necessary!).
As Peter da Silva points out to Henry Spencer, MIDI is unidirectional.
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a serial protocol for interfacing musical instruments (and often lighting and such); it runs over 5-pin DIN cables at 31.25kbps.

 The best PC game ever
The first 3D Shooter I remember playing was Midi Maze on the Atari ST, back in the mid to late 80s.
Improved graphics and the addition of vehicles add very little to the gameplay, it's still the same "If it moves, shoot it" game from years ago.
We used to have Lan Partys back then to play it, though they weren't called that at the time.

The first-person shooter game MIDI Maze, 1987 (for the Atari ST) and its followup Faceball 2000 (for various handhelds and consoles) exclusively used 3D-rendered smileys of various shapes, expressions, and colors as its players and enemies.
In Timescape, a seventh-season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Jean-Luc Picard laughed hysterically at a smiley he carved in a cloud of smoke that was frozen in time.
The poster for the 2001 film Evolution featured the aforementioned three-eyed mutant smiley.
