Live action role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A live action role-playing game (or LARP as it is often known) is a form of role-playing game where the participants perform some or all of the physical actions of the characters they are playing.
The style of LARP varies from game system to game system.
Many LARPs (such as NERO, Amtgard and the Mind's Eye Theatre line) present most of their story with all their players gathered together, perhaps several dozen players politicking at a gathering or defending a besieged town.

 Larp: an introduction Amor Fati
In some regions, larp is one of the activities associated with the "gaming" culture, together with board games, computer games and verbal roleplaying.
At the moment the larp begins, the organisers will relinquish most of their authority to shape the larp and leave it to the players who pretend to be their characters for the rest of the larp.
Some larp events last half an hour, others last a full week, players will usually be costumed as their characters and the location where they play will usually bear some remniscence to the location where they are pretending to be.

 Theoretical Speculations about LARPs.
In addition, LARP's tend to be insensitive towards desires to, for example, "imagine" that such-and-such a player is being convincing in his speech when he's actually a stuttering idiot, so that's also, to a certain extent, gamist, in that player skill is required and tested.
Most larps map the physical location to a game location, and anything outside the game location is handled by GM fiat/tabletop roleplaying/mechanics etc. For example, if we're playing Vampire, then the larp room maps to Elysium (a Vampire sanctuary) and anything happening in the city outside Elysium is handled by the GM.
Most LARP mechanics out there right now are gamist (which amuses the hell out of me, given the stereotypical LARPer's insistance that they're so far beyond D&D-like games) in that they reward player skill with the mechanic.

RPG.NET Gamer's Realm-- Essays and Articles
Broadly speaking, "LARP" covers games where the players are physically interacting (instead of just sitting around a table), and each player takes on a "character" for the purpose of the game.
The LARP form of game has certain meta-assumptions that seem very common, and which the SCA breaks.
With a few rare exceptions, LARPs have a structure that gives each character one or more goals to be shooting for in the course of a game or campaign.

 What is LARPs
In a LARP game you dress in costume appropriate to your character and act and talk as appropriate for that character.
In this players take on the roles of individuals they have envisioned and act out their goals and motivations with each other.

There is considerably more touching involved in the roles, whereas in my experience of American larps players are reluctant to violate other players' space even if there isn't such a rule.

It also seemed that this LARP batch reeked of high school-esque cliques (though the LARPers varied in ages from teens to adults), acting as a social elite in a setting where they could claim to be so (possibly having suffered from being deemed as outsiders/"freaks" during those high school years), esp. their characters.
As with all things, there are good and bad examples of LARPS and LARP players..

 A Parent's Guide To Role-Playing Games
Whereas in table-top skill tests are determined by rolling dice, LARP tends to use quick games such as "paper, rock, scissors." Players are not allowed to touch one another, bring real weapons, or play outside of a designated area during a designated time.

Because of this, and because the players tend to run around in the woods at night, all LARPs have an insurance waiver.

These players play characters with a vast amount of unheralded, unseen power and go out of their way to be meek and unassuming, at least until a dramatic confrontation occurs in their vicinity.

When I say a decent 100+-player Narrativist LARP is possible and has been done, I'm speaking from experience, but that doesn't mean you can play in one this coming weekend.
What this means, is that in my experience, unless the players in the LARP were not only good players/improvosational actors, but also good at creating characters with hooks that other less experienced, less outgoing players could latch onto, you ended up with extensive cliques in the LARPs.
