Topic: Ken Whyld

 [No title]
Whyld attempted to compile every known Lasker game: exhibitions, offhands, consultations, blindfolds, simuls, leapfrog simuls, even composed problems and checkers games, as well as serious tournaments and matches.
Soloviov gives a 28-move Vienna Game (1 e4 e5 2 Nc3) that purports to be Mieses-Lasker, but Whyld says that against Mieses, Lasker played the white side of a Zukertort Opening (1 Nf3), that the game was not finished, and the score is lost.
Instead, the Mieses-Lasker moves that Soloviov claims were the official tournament game of July 1890, are given by Whyld as an offhand encounter from October 1889.

Chessays - Kenneth Whyld Tribute (1926-2003)
Whyld was a strong amateur player who won the Nottinghamshire county championship and took part in the British Championship in 1956.
Ken provided information on Hannah Flagg Gould and her poem, Address to the Automaton Chess Player.
Together, they seemed to radiate the kind of warmth and cordialiy so rare today's world and I felt deeply honoured to have somehow fallen into the midst of their enchantment.

A careful reading shows that Briton Ken Whyld, one of the game's most respected writers (he was co-author of The Oxford Companion to Chess), has packed a good deal of information in a small space.
Whyld states that compilation of Lasker games presents certain problems.
A certain trend in chess scholarship and publishing seems very evident these days: the attempt to amass every known game ever played by noteworthy masters, with publication as the natural outcome once the collection is deemed as complete as possible.

A Tribute to Ken Whyld : Three New Lasker Games By Neil Brennen
The second Lasker game from Mitchell's column is, perhaps, the game that caused Whyld to question the attribution to Lasker.
Lasker was also a starting point for my friendship with Ken, as my stumbling across a previously unknown Lasker game in a Philadelphia chess column was the reason I contacted him early in 2000.
In my last e-mail exchange with Whyld he doubted these games were genuinely played by Emanuel Lasker, and asked me to make sure that it wasn't Edward Lasker instead.

 Parr on the OCTC again
To the extent that Hooper and Whyld required such Soviet and Eastern European materials from behind the Iron Curtain, they were served well by their sources.
This is not a case of Larry Parr going after two dead men, while leaving them alone when they were alive.
Does that mean that it would be correct to say that Larry Parr accused Hooper and Whyld of being liars in the service of individual interests and careers within the Soviet chess bureaucracy or sport bureaucracy, or some other subset of people within the USSR?

Having been exhausted by this struggle, but not defeated, I decided to look at the next game, game three of the same match.
I played through the first game and noticed that it only had forty-four moves while my database had forty-five moves.

Anyway here is the game, in the form of a letter from the winner to Ken Whyld, with (on the back) notes to the game which he was about to submit to B. Wood’s Chess magazine.

Whyld was a strong amateur chess player, taking part in the British Chess Championship in 1956 and winning the county championship of Nottinghamshire.
As well as the Oxford Companion to Chess, Whyld was the author of other reference works such as Chess: The Records (1986), an adjunct to the Guinness Book of Records and the comprehensive The Collected Games of Emanuel Lasker (1998).

LA STORIA DEGLI SCACCHI-Galleria d'Arte: "Chess Players" by Liberale da Verona - G. Ferlito
Indeed Weller recognized the panel as an "abducted left portion" of the panel depicting the "Chess Players" which he attributed to Franceso di Giorgio.
The chess scholar, Ken Whyld, in the Chess Collector of April 1992 pointed out that Allen Stuart Weller, in 1943, attributed to Francesco di Giorgio a wooden panel, depicting a group of youths, in the collection of E. Berenson at Settignano (Florence).
Ken Whyld was interested therefore to know whether the panel in question was the same as referred by me as at "Villa I Tatti" and if it was possible to see a photographic reconstruction of the three panels as they are now identified as belonging to the same "cassone" painted by Liberale da Verona.
