Kappa (mythical creature) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A status ailment in the computer role-playing game Final Fantasy VI transformed the affected player character into a kappa; however, the word "kappa" was replaced with the word "imp" for the English language localization of the game.
Kappa appear in a number of video games, many of which have appeared in localized form in the West.
Some descriptions say their faces are apelike, while others show them with beaked visages more like those of tortoises or with duck beaks.

One creature we put in the game was a well-known Japanese creature called the "Kappa" (pronounced kind of like "cop-ah").
Japanese people are going to be very aware of these kinds of small details for creatures originating from their country.
Although it's familiar to the Japanese, it's a little too unfamiliar for our understanding of what a monster is. We wouldn't see any nostalgia in it at all.

In Japan, the term "Suzaku" is translated as "Red Bird" or "Red Chinese Phoenix." In both Japan and China, the symbolism of the red bird seems to be identical to or merged with that of the mythological Ho-oo (Phoenix).
In Japan, the tiger is sometimes confused with the mythological Chinese Ch'i-lin (Qilin), which is rendered Kirin in Japan.
In any case, the four animals are much more prevalent in artwork in China than in Japan, although in Japan one can still find groupings of the four creatures.

Immediately east of the Archer/Centaur is the small, boomerang-shaped sky figure Capricornus.
To a surprising degree, the outer frame, shape, and condition of our physical bodies, and the enveloping myths that we enact in each lifetime, are derived from these primordial figures; they represent the personal incarnational drama each of us enacts, every day, in each lifetime.
