Joystick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A joystick is generally configured so that moving the stick left or right signals movement along the X axis, and moving it forward (up) or back (down) signals movement along the Y axis.
(Digital joysticks were very common as game controllers for the video game consoles, arcade machines, and home computers of the 1980s.)
More recently, analog joysticks have now become standard on video game consoles and have the ability to calculate the amount of distance that the stick has moved from neutral position.

But, if you wanted the user to be able to contiuously fire by holding down the trigger (which is what the player might expect), using the joystick time wouldn't work- the gun would only fire when the trigger was pulled the first time.
It's recommended that you use render events for the timing of your application, rather than input events, however- as an example, if you wanted to have the joystick trigger fire a gun, and use the gun's fire time to determine how soon the player could fire again, you could use joystick events for this.
