Hanafuda (花札) is a Japanese gambling card game which evolved from Western playing cards.
The eventual result of all this was a game called Hanafuda, which combined traditional Japanese games with Western-style playing cards.
There are many scoring version and games you can play with this deck, such as Koi-Koi.

In Japan the cards are called Hanafuda (flower cards) and the fishing games played with them include Hachi-hachi (88), Koi Koi, Hana Awase and Mushi.
Meanwhile, Graham Leonard's Hanafuda and Kabufuda site has rules for several Japanese games played with flower cards.
In Hawaii, it seems that the cards are called Hanafuda as in Japan, but the game is called Sakura (Cherry) after the March suit or Higo Bana.

BTW, Games People Play here in Cambridge, MA sells "Go Stop", a Hanafuda deck with a set of rules which seem to be a slightly different version of Koi-Koi.
It has the rules for 5 games (including Koi-Koi).
It's produced by some guy here in MA (Go Stop Games, Springfield, MA (413) 736-9126) who shows up at the store some Saturdays to demonstrate "Go Stop" to passers-by.

Nintendo doesn't make hanafuda anymore (to the best of my knowledge), but there are some other companies that make these cards today.
The cards are called hwa-tu in Korea, and hanafuda in Japan.
