Vic Viper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While at first glance the Vic Viper in each Gradius game appears to be the same ship, it is in fact a series of fighters, each with their own specific model numbers, although this is only apparent in Gradius V for the PS2 and the arcade game Solar Assault.
In Gradius III, the player was allowed to customize the Vic Viper's armaments to their own specifications with a Weapon Edit mode, which was retained in Gradius V and expanded in the PS2 release of Gradius III and IV by a feature known as "Extra Edit," available after completing the game.
The ship of the MSX-exclusive Gradius 2 (not to be confused with the original arcade game Gradius II: GOFER no Yabou, and hereafter referred to as "Nemesis 2," its European name) was also remarkable in the respect that it was able to add weaponry to itself after defeating some bosses, extending the power-up meter.

 Gamerdad - Gradius V
Gradius V offers 2 player simultaneous play, while most other games in the series were one player only.
Even though the Gradius series of games is old, you may be surprised that your child may recognize it.
Gradius games are famous for being VERY challenging, and V is no exception.

You can also earn more continues as they play the game and rack up time with the game, which is a much-appreciated bonus for players.
Gradius V's co-operative play mode and weapons edit screens are excellent new features that extend the game's longevity.
The game begins with a slick CGI introductory movie that brings you right into the Gradius world, and serves a tantalizing glimpse of what a true 3D Gradius game would be like.

 Gradius V for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 Gradius V Review
Gradius V is a loving tribute to a classic series and to a style of gaming that may be old fashioned, but judging by how fun this game is, one that certainly isn't obsolete.
Fans of Treasure's past accomplishments or of previous games in the Gradius series certainly won't be disappointed by Gradius V, a game that definitely stays true to the series' roots, and yet wraps up a traditionally frenetic and very tough gameplay experience in modern trappings.
There's no way you'll finish Gradius V the first 10 or 20 times you play it, even if you set the difficulty to the "very easy" setting and crank up the maximum number of lives and crank down the point totals required to earn more.

Gradius 2 =1988= This was the first Gradius game, unforgivably not released in the U.S.A, and because of this, I never had the opptiunity to play it.
As I already mentioned above, Gradius 3, is known for being one of the hardest games, not only in the Gradius seires, but also for all time.
This is, unfortinally, one of the most uninspired Gradius games introducing absolutely no new stage concepts and taking out the edit option that was in the previous 2 gradius games.

Game Over Online Magazine - Gradius V
Gradius V, on any difficulty, is not an easy game, but it shouldn't be.
Gradius V seems to be a lot easier for most people if you use the Type-2 ship, which features options with a 360-degree field of fire, but each Type has strengths and weaknesses.
Gradius V isn't about throwing endless tides of bullets at you; instead, it's about weak points, recognizable patterns, and sudden changes to the rules.

Gradius Galaxies Review for Game Boy Advance - Gaming Age
Sadly, Gradius Galaxies, despite being a good game, will see reviewers taking the latter role: it's a game for the shooter hardcore that plays too strongly to a presumably-deficient casual audience.
However, since the game was designed around a handheld, the difficulty and options were scaled back, perhaps under the assumption that this game might be played by "casual" gamers.
Best of all, with full power-ups and four options, the game doesn't even stutter, even when the background is packed with translucent enemies, parallax effects galore and morphing fields.

Gradius III & IV for Playstation 2
The Gradius Series and it's spinoffs Axelay and Lifeforce (Salamander in Japan), have always tested the peak of a players eye hand coordination.
For younger video game players, Gradius III and IV may seem boring and very linear in gameplay.
Konami has added some new smoother effects to Gradius III and has kept it the original way the game should have been played years ago, but Gradius III is just a warm up to it's difficult sequel...

 Amazon.co.uk: Gradius V (PS2): PC & Video Games
The version on the Playstation 2 was a tadd more difficult, and the music was not the music I was used to on the SNES (which is far better.) On the cover it said "2 player." But that wasn't 2 player, it was only 2 players taking turns in playing.
Anyone who has played Nemesis, Salamander or any of the previous Gradius (as they have all been known in Japan) games, will be instantly at home with the weapon choice system and the way the game plays in general.
Take the typical Gradius playing style, and add beautiful 3D graphics (the game is still in 2D though), some very nice music, and a two player mode (both ships flying at the same time), and this game simply couldn't be better.

Luckily, Gradius IV is of slightly better quality than its predecessor, due to the fact the game is mostly in 3D.
With Gradius III, once you have beaten a level you can then skip to that level via the main menu, meaning you don't have to play through the whole game to reach the same place.
Gradius 3 looks identical to how I remember it, which isn't surprising really because rather than porting the game they seemed to have emulated the original arcade version, with some terrible results.

Gradius is a visually spectacular game, as one might expect, and all the moreso because threats can come from any direction, at any time.
A lot of people cut their teeth on this game, back in the NES days; it was one of the few punishingly difficult shooters, back on that platform, that was also somewhat fair.
A new online system will allow you to share your high scores with the Internet, and, of course, be consistently amazed, impressed, and vaguely emasculated by the immense point totals the Japanese players have managed to rack up.

Gradius V gameplay is exactly what gamers would expect when going for a game like Gradius V as it is very challenging and stays true to its genre.
When I look at games like Gradius V, I remember all those days where the graphics of a game mattered less and less and the true value of the game was determined in the gameplay department.

 Gradius V Review - PlayStation 2
Unless you’ve played a lot of the previous Gradius games, you are most likely not going to be able to beat this game your first time through…or even your second.
The only downside is that there isn’t as much to Gradius V as there is to some of its competition (R-Type Final, for example) in terms of variation and replay value, but the key element of Gradius V is its challenging and fun gameplay.
There is also a lot of gameplay packed into Gradius V, but most of it is going to be practice.

Gradius V also tries to implement story elements into the game, but honestly, I think it is just an excuse to give the gamer a breather between heated stages.
Not straying away from an already perfected art, Konami has found a way to bring the great game play of old, yet give it a polished look so that today’s generation of gamers won’t be disappointed.

The gameplay in Gradius V stays true to what you would expect from a game of this type.
Enemies that don't require you to think twice about filling the screen, leaving little space to move or spewing bullets all over the place meaning maneuvering is as vital to the game as the ability to shoot.
You can, if you like, remove this option in the configuration, but I really think that the game was designed with having it turned on in mind.

As per usual in the Gradius series, the weapon power-up system has the player collecting power-ups and deciding whether to save their use for something strong, or use them quickly to take advantage of something smaller now.
Despite this oversight, Gradius V's level design, enemy layout, and overall game design is impeccable.

Those wanting a little strategy will enjoy the game's four weapon system types—each has speed boost, force field, lasers, missiles, and double shot—that differ on where missiles are shot from and, most importantly, how the pods, the extra dots that stay near the ship and shoot when the player shoots, are controlled.
The weapon type, power-up system, and control scheme also go a long way in complementing the dynamic levels to keep the game incredibly addictive.
Now, I've been known to enjoy some Life Force and a little Nemesis—now that I've dated my experience with the genre, I'll skip along—but I never got so entranced by a title that I couldn't stop playing.
