God of War Review for PS2
God of War is no walk in the park, and most players will have a hard time beating the game on even normal settings, but the experience is intensely satisfying for the hard-core player.
God of War's fierce action is going to draw in legions of players, but the game features a surprisingly extensive puzzle solving sequences as well, with many going beyond the standard parameters players have come to expect.
God of War's gameplay is unforgiving, and will test even the best players, but these combat sequences don't make up the entire experience.

Early on, this came in the form of requiring the player to backtrack a significant distance without making it obvious where he was supposed to go; I spent a good amount of time in the first stages of the game wandering aimlessly while I tried to figure out where the game wanted me to go.
All told, God of War is easily one of the best games to come out in 2005 so far.
When all is said and done though, combat is what makes up the bulk of the game, and God of War’s combat system is easily one of the most responsive and fluid I’ve encountered in games of this type.

Preview - God of War // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
God of War begins on a mountaintop, as a nameless Spartan soldier prepares to plunge to his self-inflicted death, and the game charts the preceding events in the form of a three or four-chapter story delivered via playable flashbacks.
David Jaffe was reportedly at pains to point out that the game also places a heavy emphasis on story-telling, with multiple endings available to encourage replay value, and that the game will be suitably brutal, with Cyclops boss characters and puzzles based on strategic placement of severed heads.
As we can already see from the visuals (which, despite the best efforts of the screenshot Nazis, we've managed to dig up watermark-free), the game features some suitably epic and misty locations, temples and monuments to various gods, and our muscular, grey-skinned hero himself is no slouch with the searing chain-sword.

Admittedly, the way it handles nudity early on in the game is a mite ham-fisted, but on the whole it's one of those rare games where you'll actually want to watch cut-scenes again.
Narrowed down to its own genre, God Of War kicks many of Capcom's hilariously hammy efforts into orbit, but next to almost any American-produced game it's handled with a cinematic intensity that never resorts to trivialising the task at hand.

Before I forget there is another that sets God of War apart from the rest of the action crew and that’s the amount of stuff you unlock after beating the game.
One thing that sets it apart from the rest of the pack is how truly adult the game is. No punches were pulled and the kiddy gloves have been cast into the blazing fires of Hades.
