Kamsky did not play any rated games after that except in 1999, when he returned to play in the World Championship.
At one point he was the third highest rated player in the world, but played no FIDE-rated games between 1999 and late 2004.
After losing this match he announced he was giving up chess and going to study medicine.

Kamsky did play in the 1999 FIDE KO in Las Vegas, but was eliminated in the first round by eventual winner Alexander Khalifman.

It seems that both Karpov and Kamsky are very much against the idea of playing there now and some kind of meeting may have taken place at the Melody Amber tournament currently on in Monte Carlo.
In my talks with Iljumzhinov, I made it clear to him that my match with Kamsky must be played in order to have a continuity for the next World Championship cycle.
This seemed the most likely course of events since the US State Department warned the Kamsky's about large financial and other penalties for playing such a match.

When I asked Rustam Kamsky for an interview with his son Gata Kamsky during the Triveni GM tournament at Delhi during December 1990 he was emphatic and clear:yes, but only after the tournament was over.
