Game engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A well-known subset of game engines are 3D first-person shooter (FPS) game engines.
The term "game engine" arose in the mid-1990s, especially in connection with 3D games such as first-person shooters (FPS).
First-person shooter games remain the predominant users of third-party game engines, but they are now also being used in other genres.

 Powered By Unreal Technology
All gameplay features are supported in network play, enabling vehicle-based multiplayer games, competitive team games with NPC's or bots, cooperative play in a single player focused game, and so on.
Unreal Engine gameplay network programming is high-level and data-driven, allowing UnrealScript game code to specify variables and functions to be replicated between client and server to maintain a consistent approximation of game state.
Different genres of games will have widely varying expectations of player counts, scene size, and performance, so these specifications should be regarded as one data point for one project rather than hard requirements for all.

Game Engine DLL Confusion - GameDev.Net Discussion Forums
I want the engine specific code of my game engine to be in a DLL, and the game specific code to be in the EXE.
With the engine as a dll instead of being married to your game exe, you could write a program to build your world (or whatever) that uses your game engine so "what you see is what you get".
I know there are other ways of going about this (such as engine in EXE and game in DLL) but I am sticking with this method because it seems logical to me, and it is simple enough for my first game engine.

A 3D game engine follows this basic rule and literally checks constantly to be sure that every moveable object in the game hasn't hit any walls or any other object that can stop it, such as a player (if a rocket is traveling toward one, for instance).
The engine only plays a supporting role." Like the engine of a car, the engine of a game is made up of several components, some of which the user can readily see and some of which run more in the background and out of sight.
