 Review of Free Fire Zone Vietnam Wargaming Rules
The game system was deliberately simplified to allow players to get on with the game rather than trying to operate unrealistic and complex fire requests.
There is a 'victory point penalty' for using support fire, designed to rein in the over zealous user and prevent the game from bogging down.

Sometimes we would get very specific targets based upon reconnaissance or intelligence, but usually we would get a 'free fire zone', an area several kilometers square in which there was known or suspected enemy activity and no friendly forces or civilians.

The United States Air Force spared Schmidt and fellow-pilot Bill Umbach of the Illinois Air National Guard from court martial, but both are receiving other lesser forms of punishment because of the incident (The Tennessean, 6/20/03, p 13A).
