Chess Game History - World Chess Championship
Chess or “The Game of the Kings” is a classic, abstract strategy board game for two players, which requires 32 chess pieces, or chessmen as they are popularly called and a board.
Chess is played recreationally and competitively in clubs, tournaments, on-line, and by mail (correspondence chess).
Sometimes, a game of chess could be seen as an abstract war game or a mental martial art.

FIDE World Chess Championship 2004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The match was to be held over 12 games with the time control 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by an additional one hour for the next 20 moves, followed by an additional 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with an increment of 15 seconds per move from move one.
Therefore, as well as the championship determining who was to be the next FIDE world champion, it would also determine who would play Kasparov in what was effectively a semifinal match for the unified championship.
Similar concerns were expressed in an Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) open letter of May 26 [7] (the ACP have also criticized several other aspects of the tournament's organization).

World Chess Championship: Information From Answers.com
The World Chess Championship is played to determine the World Champion in the board game chess.
The Women's World Championship was established by FIDE in 1927 as a single tournament held alongside the Chess Olympiad.
The World Champion is not necessarily the highest-rated player in the world: Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, and Veselin Topalov are the three highest-ranked players on the January 2005 FIDE rating list, but none of them currently hold any championship title.

Graeme Cree's World Chess Championship Page
Concurrently with the Kasparov-Short match, FIDE held its own "World Championship" Match between Jan Timman, the loser of the previous Candidates Final, and Anatoly Karpov, the loser of one of the semi-final matches (Yusupov, the other semi-final loser was, unaccountably, left out).
Alternately, you can go down to Section 6, The World Championship Box Score, and click the link in the "Winning Score" column, to save a step and go directly to the games.
A World Championship tournament was then held in 1948 to name a new champion.

 Garry Kasparov - Free Encyclopedia
Kasparov proved in 2001 that he was still the strongest tournament player in the world with his fine performance in the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee.
FIDE set up their "World Championship" with the loser of the Candidates final, Jan Timman, and previous World Champion Karpov.
The second Karpov-Kasparov match in 1985 was organised as the best of 24 games, first player to 12.5 points would claim the title (in the event of a 12-12 draw, the title would go to Karpov as the reigning champion).

ACP Board and FIDE on World Championship Contract
Since the publication of the "Player's Undertaking" by the FIDE Secretariat, several participants have expressed their concern to the ACP over many issues raised by the organization of the upcoming 2004 FIDE World Chess Championship to be held in Libya and Malta, from 18 June until 13 July 2004.
FIDE is asking all the qualified and reserve players to meet the above requirements.
To begin with, the "Player's Undertaking" only describes the players' obligations towards FIDE, whereas no mention is made of FIDE's obligations towards the players.

Association of Chess Professionals ACP News
These talks have not brought any tangible results, the FIDE representatives remained adamant that the current "Player's Undertaking" had to be signed first by the players before anything else could be discussed.
In spite of our endeavours, FIDE's insistence on sticking to a self-imposed schedule and refusal to address the participants' demands might lead to the absence of several top players in the 2004 FIDE World Championship.
Until now, FIDE's only response to our letters has been a very succinct announcement by its Secretariat, reminding qualified players and reserves that only signed copies of the original "Player's Undertaking" would be accepted by FIDE.

The Daily Dirt Chess Blog: FIDE WCh in Argentina, Che!
FIDE is positive that the games will be held successfully in San Luis and this year's World Chess Championship will further establish the image of chess as a competitive and educational sport not only in Argentina but in whole geographical region of South America.
If that's the kind of tournament format FIDE is going to adhere itself to, then I think the classical tradition of chess, whereby one plays against every worthy opponent with 2 hrs for first 40 moves and time additions later on will definitely be destroyed.
These are the hard facts of being a chess professional in a industrial and commercialized world in which chess is fighting with other big-time sports like soccer, golf and tennis for constant attention.

MOSCOW, December 10: DEFENDING world champion Viswnathan Anand was once again held to a draw, this time when the Indian ace had white pieces in the second game of the sixth round of the World Chess Championships against Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine at the Kremlin Hall in Moscow.
In comparison to last year’s FIDE Knockout World Chess Championships when most of the leading players went quite far before they started falling by the wayside and left Viswanathan Anand and Alexei Shirov to fight it out for the title, this year in Moscow many leading players have been eliminated.
MOSCOW, DECEMBER 2: Viswanathan Anand passed another stern French test in the third round of the World Chess Championships, as he overcame a tenacious Russia-born French player, Vladislav Tkachiev in a marathon tie-breaker before winning a passage into the pre-quarter finals of the Championships.
