Endgame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chess, the endgame (or end game or ending) refers to the stage of the game when there are few pieces left on the board.
The line between middlegame and endgame is often not clear, and may occur gradually or with the quick exchange of a few pairs of pieces.
A king and pawn endgame with an outside passed pawn should be a far easier win than a middlegame a rook ahead.

Endgame study - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some argue that White must only have only one move at each juncture to achieve one's aim, though some feel that minor alternatives (such as a choice of moving a knight b1-c3-b5 or b1-a3-b5; see algebraic notation for an explanation of this notation) are permissible.
Indeed, it will not be obvious to many players that the position at the end of the given line is a draw at all.
Most composers, including Troitzky, Rinck and other famous figures such as Genrikh Kasparyan, are known primarily for their studies, being little known as players.

Endgame studies have always terrified me. This is because I may be among the world’s worst endgame players and I have the game scores to prove it.
My inability to play endgames has had me hopelessly mired as a low ranking “A” player for years and the situation hasn’t improved much, despite having two bookshelves lined with books on how to play the endings.
With such a complex subject matter, it would be easy to leave most players below the master level scratching their heads, but Nunn’s analysis and detailed explanations make this a highly readable and understandable book.

Endgame studies, which typically feature just a handful of pieces, usually look very much like they might have been taken from an actual game.
That is the beauty of a good endgame study - but don't expect to do much more than to scratch the surface if you have spent less than half an hour on each diagram.
In an over-the-board game, the ability to use the pieces in harmony is paramount, and those players who can exploit every resource in a position are those who become champions.

The usual specification for an endgame study is for white to win or draw, but not in a fixed number of moves.
If a C-V-L captures a piece, it will not be able to return to the square it left on the next move unless an opposing piece immediately moves to that square.
Thus to win means White obtains a clear material advantage, perhaps checkmates in some lines, or arrives at a position known in the literature to be a win.

There have also been attempts at constructing the shortest possible game to end in stalemate: Sam Loyd devised a game which ended in stalemate after just ten moves (1.e3 a5 2.Qh5 Ra6 3.Qxa5 h5 4.Qxc7 Rah6 5.h4 f6 6.Qxd7+ Kf7 7.Qxb7 Qd3 8.Qxb8 Qh7 9.Qxc8 Kg6 10.Qe6).
In endgame studies, the idea of stalemate very frequently occurs, and in chess problems there is sometimes a stipulation for "white to move and stalemate black in n moves" (rather than the more common "white to move and checkmate black in n moves").
