Elo rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suppose Player A has a rating of 1613, and plays in a five-round tournament.
ELO ranking for games without the possibility of draws (Go, Backgammon) is discussed in Go rating with ELO.
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess and Go.

Talk:Elo rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rating difference of 2900 ELO points from (Gu Li) to a 20 kyu with 100 ELO points is a difference in insight into the game by 29 times the standard deviation (100 ELO points).
The rating systems in place today are a political compromise between mathematicians who would like to estimate hypothetical parameters accurately and players who want each game to be a fight over the rating points they win and lose.
When the three players contest a multi-player game, the odds will be 569:1728:3694.

 GameKnot.com rating system
Rating is considered to be equal to 1200 for all players during their first 5 games.
During the first 20 games, player's rating is calculated as an average of the ratings of all his or her opponents, +400 in case of a win, -400 in case of a loss, equal in case of a draw.
The maximum of two ratings -- at the beginning of the game and at the end -- is used as the player's rating for the purpose of computing the rating adjustments.

Bonzini USA Tournament Ranking & Rating System
The basic theory of the Elo rating system is that the difference between the ratings of players is a guide to predicting the outcome of a contest between those two players.
The ratings systems may not be identical (although they might be based on the same principles), the rating pools (the player base in the systems) may differ, and the matches may have been played under different conditions.
Likewise, a team consisting of a 1750 point player and a 2040 point player would logically be expected to be better than (and thus more “probable” to win per the Elo rating system) a team consisting of a 1750 point player and a 1600 point player.

 SL Dueling Ladder - Information
Elo's recommended K-factors were 32 for regular chess players and 16 for masters (masters are high-rated chess players, and a lower K-factor simply means that they don't move in rating as much because they stand to gain or lose less); in actual implementation, the K-factors used were 30 and 10, respectively.
To put it simply, the new rating formula adds or subtracts from the player's old rating a number of points determined by multiplying 32 (the K-factor) by the difference between the dueler's score and his or her expected score.
That means that the interval between the dueler's rating and his or her opponent's rating plays a significant role in determining how many points the dueler stands to gain or lose.

When we have some rating ELO list, and players playing new games, the rating of players is changing depend on his actual power (some players are improving his ability to play the game and going be better).
For example: If Player with rating 2000 will play 1000 games with performance of 2020 his new rating cannot be bigger than 2020, but is set on 2020.
New rating for such player has to be determined the same way as for new players without rating : as his performance.

It is a proven method of rating players based on the difference of ratings of the two players, and their score.
By preventing rated games being the norm, it means that the rating system is less prone to distortion by the same player creating multiple guest accounts, and then using those accounts to deliberately lose games.
This performance-based rating system ensures for example that you cannot gain points from losing against a much stronger player, or lose points by winning against a much weaker player.

The ELO player-rating system compares players’ match records against their opponents’ match records and determines the probability of the player winning the matchup.
All players are rated at the beginning with the first match in which they play.
When a player defeats an opponent with a higher rating, the player’s rating goes up more than if he or she defeated a player with a lower rating (since players should defeat opponents who have lower ratings).

The so called "Elo rating" has proven to be a reliable system to determine the strength of chess players from beginners to grandmasters.
So, the better your opponent is rated, the more points you will earn for a win or draw; and if you lose, you are not going to lose too much of your rating.
Basically, the difference between the Elo ratings for two opponents results in a percentage telling which winning expectation either player has got.

Train Like A Chess Champion by Ray Gordon
A player rated 2000 in my playing days is roughly equal to a 1600-1700 player today.
In general, a player rated 100 points higher will win two out of three times, at 200 points he'll win three out of four, and at 400 points he'll win slightly more than 90 percent of the time, while at 720 points victory is considered close to a statistical certainty.
The Elo rating consists of "points" which are effectively wagered in each game, at odds determined by the rating difference.

Heretic's Corner - Dealing with the Rating System, by Dominick Riesland - a Magic: the Gathering article
In cases of ratings that are near one another, the change will be close to half the K-value; changes equal to the full K-value only occur in cases of a complete upset (in a 32K event, that happens when an underdog who is 720 points or so lower than his or her opponent wins).
Whereas moving 200 points in ELO rating might be impressive for randomly winning a Grand Prix, it doesn't reflect the true value of the win, and that rating boost will get demolished if a losing streak hits.
So taking the successive integer formula and multiplying the result by 2 is exactly what my formula says people in a "perfect" single elimination (i.e., one with exactly 8 players, or 16, or 32, etc. so that no one gets a bye) will receive, if we plug in the number of rounds the player plays.

However, in 1998, FIDE largely scrapped the old system of Candidate Matches, instead having a large knock-out event in which a large number of players contested short matches against each other over just a few weeks.
