Dungeons & Dragons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dungeons and Dragons is an open-ended "make-believe" game in which players choose which actions their characters will take and the results of those actions are determined using the rules of the game, which govern everything from combat to social interaction.
The Dungeons and Dragons Computer Labyrinth Game (1980) was the first computer/board game hybrid and the first DandD licensed game that contained digital electronics.
The game is presented by a Dungeon Master (DM) to a group of players.

Dungeons and Dragons (also known as D&D) has been a popular roleplaying game for decades and is based on a fantasy world.
One player assumes the role of “Dungeon Master,” which entails directing the game and controlling the labyrinth, while the others select from a large selection of characters that includes warriors, magicians, dwarfs and thieves.
Most D&D players do not don costumes, and participants in such costume games are called "LARPers" (for live-action role playing).

 The Real Truth About D&D
Dungeons and Dragons (DandD) was the original Role-Playing Game (RPG), and is still the most popular.
She started a campaign to restrict availability of the game, by collecting newspaper reports and anecdotal accounts of suicides/criminal activities by players of the game.
It was created by Gary Gygax of TSR, Inc. in 1973 and has been the basis of hundreds of other games, books, magazines, etc. The game is played by a group of people, usually 3-7, where one person is the Game Master (GM), and the others are Player Characters (PC's).

 NPR : D&D Turns 30
Dungeons and Dragons players at Peter Girvan's house in the Bronx recoil in mock horror as a player's battle shot goes terribly astray with a bad roll of odd-shaped dice.
The world these players journey through and the opponents they encounter are the responsibility of another player called the "dungeon master." With a roll of the dice, players find out how well their characters fare in battle.
The game is also credited with inspiring a whole generation of game designers, just as the computer revolution took root.

 History of Dungeons and Dragons
The rules were numerous, enough to require a separate Dungeon Master's Guide and Player's Handbook, and the DandD literature continued to expand as the game grew in popularity.
Unlike traditional board games, Dungeons and Dragons technically didn't even need a board.
Through video games like Baldur's Gate, a December 2000 Dungeons and Dragons feature film, and the ongoing original game, Dungeons and Dragons' eternal quest for danger, battle, treasure and fantasy continue to offer at least a brief respite from this everyday and ordinary world of ours.

 Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / How 'Dungeons' changed the world
Dungeons and Dragons is seeing an increase in popularity as a whole new generation raised on video games begins to look for a way back to the more personally and socially engaging pleasures of sitting around with a bunch of friends and making stuff up.
Imagine, parents, that some of your kids are actually turning the TV off to talk to each other, to play something that they have to "make themselves."
Only a generation of imaginations roused by role playing could have made those movies possible.

Confessions of a Dungeons & Dragons Addict
The game itself is not a stumbling block to faith, but the attitudes of those who would rebuke a Dungeons and Dragons(tm) player in the name of Jesus and walk away rather than use the valuable lessons of the game as a building block for a true faith are.
If Dungeons and Dragons(tm) is wrong, if it leads to a downward path (there is no evidence to support such a contention), then the task of Christians is to love the players regardless of where their lives lead.
Most ongoing Dungeons and Dragons(tm) games do not have the insights to be gained from people of the Book sitting at the table bringing faith to bear on the worlds of human fantasy.

Dungeons & Dragons designers, writers discuss the future of licensed games - PC News at GameSpot
"That's the future...more diverse gaming experiences all true to the Dungeons and Dragons property, but all tapping into a different type of gameplay." Stark added his own thoughts that tabletop games and computer and console games should be able to coexist peacefully rather than compete with each other for market share.
GameSpot was fortunate enough to meet with several designers and writers at the Gen Con Indy 2004 convention to discuss the 30th anniversary of the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game and what this auspicious event means for future video games that will use the license.
Stark went on to discuss the upcoming licensed Dungeons and Dragons PC and console games, like Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone and Neverwinter Nights 2, which will use the updated 3.5 Edition rules.

One of them, Dungeons & Dragons Computer Labyrinth Game in 1980 was the original board game which was a computer/board game hybrid and the first D&D licensed game that contained digital electronics.
A movie, Dungeons & Dragons, very loosely based on the gaming conventions, was released in 2000.
It was published by Gygax's company TSR, then known by its full name of "Tactical Studies Rules." Dungeons & Dragons (which evolved from the Chainmail system of wargaming rules fantasy supplement) was one of the first role-playing games and it is by far the most well-known and best selling.

 M. J. Young's Dungeons & Dragons Materials
Dungeon Master's Reference Materials is drawn from my own book of useful charts and tables which I created over the years just so I would have answers to the questions players always ask.
I started with a Basic Dungeons and Dragons (first edition) boxed set, bought some dice, picked up one or two Chainmail supplements (that's going back a way), and, as I refereed for our favorite players, the first three hardcover books made their way into my library.
We were game players--everything from Canasta and Pinochle to Chess and Backgammon to Risk and Monopoly to Atari and Intellivision (the original Nintendo and Sega systems, for those of you too young to remember) to Bookcase Games to Pinball.

Gamers celebrate 30th anniversary of fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons players gathered in game stores around the country Saturday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games -- a pop culture phenomenon that has influenced myriad video games, books and movies.
Dungeons & Dragons went on to become one of the best-selling games of all time, inspiring fan devotion so great that some travel thousands of miles to play in tournaments.
Shaunnon Drake was at Batty's Best Comics & Games, where gamers ranging in age from their early teens to mid-30s munched pizza and played D&D through the afternoon.

Straight Talk on Dungeons and Dragons
There is no doubt in my mind that the game Dungeons and Dragons is causing young men to kill themselves and others.
It is clear to me that this game is desensitizing players to violence and also causing an increased tendency to violent behavior.
One pro-D&D psychologist wrote that "There is hardly a game in which the players do not indulge in murder, arson, torture, rape or highway robbery.

Dungeons & Dragons - history, versions, and revisions
As part of an effort to simplfy the game, they dropped the word "Advanced," and simply called it "Dungeons and Dragons." (There was no reason to call it "Advanced" anymore, as the "basic" version was dropped.)
However, Chainmail's second and third editions contained supplemental fantasy-setting rules, as well as alternate rules that show similarities to later DandD rules.
Many, many rules and play ideas proliferated in TSR's magazine The Dragon,

Many of our quests will direct players to particular private dungeons in order to complete them, though the option of a simple hack-and-slash romp with your friends is always available as well.
Encumbrance will definitely be an issue in the game, so people will need to make choices about what they bring into the dungeon — bringing a suit of armor for every occasion is going to present some problems.
We feel that rather than have a huge world that feels empty, we’re better off taking our content, and putting it into tailored spaces that are packed with things to see and do.

Brad King, author of Dungeons and Dreamers, which charts the influence of D&D on early videogames, says D&D should not be confused with board games.
D&D is a game in which a group of friends create and develop characters by rolling dice which determine skills and abilities.
The characters are taken on adventures which are plotted by a separate player - the Dungeon Master.
