 Dungeon Master's Guide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dungeon Master's Guide contains rules concerning the arbitration and administration of a game, and is intended for use primarily or only by the game's Dungeon Master.
This was a useful tool to easily beef up new characters and to allow players to play the game when others weren't available to play.
For many players, the three core rulebooks were referred to so often that some dungeon masters wore out one or more copies of each book over the years.

Basic DandD players were expected to continue to the Expert and Master DandD rules, and so on, while ADandD was supposed to be a somewhat different game.
To determine whether the attacker hits, a to hit number is obtained from a table.
But it was too late: Original D&D had already let the genie out of the bottle in encouraging players to make their own rules, and there was no going back.

The AD&D 1st edition DMG is one of the best valued books in the RPG industry, the sheer amount of info it gives, however badly organized, makes it a useful tool for not only AD&D DM's but game masters of any fantasy game.
Dungeoneer's Survival Guide --------------------------- Both survival guides make a decent job of making the average all-night urban player aware of the perils of nature.
Monster Manual, Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide: I find it hard to "rate" these three books since with just these three I was able to play AD&D for many years before buying anything else.

The rules for gunpowder weapons and lasers are useless filler that takes up space that could have been devoted to environments that average game master would actually like to see his characters in, like say astral combat rules and underwater combat rules.
You need to be in tune with the entire game enviornment, and every NPC and every monster and...I could go on, but I'm not going to bore you.
Second, the inclusion of a glossary in the Players Handbook (a runner-up in the "it's about time" category) was inexplicably absent in the DMG.

The DM should require the player's character to roll a d12 on the table of 1st level illusionist spells, rolling three times and ignoring any rolls that result in duplication.
Even if these saving throws are effective, the mace of disruption scores double damage upon opponents of this sort, i.e., 2 X bonus and 2 X dice.
When on illusionist gains read magic at the 14th level (along with several other 1st level magic‑user spells), this merely allows him or her to utilize magic‑user scrolls that contain spells different from those on the illusionists' list.
