Dragonlance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Before Dragonlance, fictional role-playing worlds evolved from the amateur creations of the games' players (with the most notable example being the Greyhawk campaign setting), or from previously existing fictional settings (I.C.E's MERP) or settings based in the real world.
The world of Dragonlance was the first fictional world to be professionally produced as a role-playing game world, with product tie-ins (novels, role-playing modules, figurines, etc.) prepared and manufactured when it was first released.
(Wizards of the Coast was subsequently purchased by Hasbro, Inc., in 1999.) Wizards of the Coast has licensed Sovereign Press to publish further Dragonlance game material.

6.6 Basics of Dragonlance role-playing There are different types of game systems, or rules, that can be used to play the Dragonlance role-playing adventures.
There are different venues for playing Dragonlance online, such as a "play-by-e-mail" (or PBEM) game, or a MUD or MUSH.

RPGnet: Review of Dragonlance Campaign Setting
Dragonlance was tossed around, blown up, revived as a different gaming system and then reduced to novels, where the property has been most successful overall.
I understand there is a sidebar in Age of Mortals that allows for players to play generalist wizards, but for a group just playing using the DLCS, this really restricts the players in their design choices.
All the races are given suitable space, comparable to the Player's Handbook for the new ones and enough flavour data for the PHB races.

RPGnet: Review of Dragonlance Chronicles #1
Dragonlance was also the first setting that really tried to make sense of the character class system of D&D. Here, we had red, black, and white wizards.
Roleplayers should thus enjoy it for a number of reasons: because of its background for the Dragonlance world (is anyone still playing there?), because of its verisimilitude as a D&D world setting, and because of its high-fantasy saga-telling.
The purpose was clearly to introduce all the characters, set up some of the basic ideas of the world, and then to get everyone moving.

Neverwinter Nights: Dragonlance Adventures: Part I
We were faced with trying to tease the game engine into playing as a BG2 style game experience in single player mode.
While the setting is familiar and the characters obviously are too, DLA1's plot flow changes from the novel and PnP module for about the first two-thirds of the mod.
It also removes from the player the ability to make decisions based on "metagaming" (doing things based on player knowledge that your character does not know) and returns to the DragonLance fan a feeling of suspense and genuine surprise.

Whether or not Krynn is high/low magic depends a great deal on what era of Dragonlance history you place the game in.
Likewise, the War of the Lance Dragonlance Setting is another fine book on that player favorite era of Dragonlance history.
05-13-2005 09:56 AM The great thing about Dragonlance is that it was largely defined by the writing, not the game mechanics.

 Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance
Dragonlance was originally envisioned with a very specific philosophy which became a standard against which all character actions and plot structures -- both in the novels and the games -- were to follow.
This philosophy is best pictured as a triangle of three points equidistant from each other witha fourth point suspended in the middle of the other three.

Every one of my players stared open-mouthed for about a minute.
Dragonlance Campaign Setting provides a wealth of background, clarification, and new material about Dragonlance that can benefit many people’s game sessions.
Although the devices of introduction are fairly standard (DM: You find an old sage who tells you a story…), my players and I enjoyed both of these adventures; be warned, they are short, so do not buy the book planning to have six months worth of game material already prepared.
