Doom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Distributed as shareware, Doom was downloaded by an estimated 10 million people within two years, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture; as a sign of its impact on the industry, games from the mid-1990s boom of first-person shooters are often known simply as "Doom clones".
Doom has appeared in several forms in addition to games, including a comic book, four novels by Dafydd Ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver (loosely based on events and locations in the games), and a film starring Karl Urban and The Rock released in 2005.
Doom is notable for the weapons arsenal available to the player, which became prototypical for first-person shooters.

These are used to place players, monsters, powerups, etc. Each thing is given a 2D coordinate, as with the vertices.
Sprites in Doom are stored in the same column based format as the walls are, which again is useful for the renderer.

Doom 3 may be the way that games will be made in the future, and while it is a beautiful game as of now the technology is not quite there yet.
Doom 3 AI consists mostly of point and shoot or chase and kill gameplay, with the occasional duck out of the way element.
Both games use advanced physics engines but in Doom 3 the environmental physics seem like an after thought with purely aesthetic value and no gameplay purpose.

 ipedia.com: Game engine Article
First-person shooter games remain the predominant users of third-party game engines, but they are now also being used in other genres.
The term "game engine" arose in the mid-1990s, especially in connection with 3D games such as first-person shooters (FPS).
Such was the popularity of id Software's DOOM and Quake games that rather than work from scratch, other developers licensed the core portions of the software and designed their own graphics, characters, weapons and levels—the "game content" or "game assets."

Just like in Quake 1, 2, and 3 the amount of level detail is dependent on the level (duh), and the AI and physics are mostly in the game code.

Back in the day, everybody licensed the Quake engines for their own games.
Not many engines these days come with shadows as impressive as Doom 3's, and that is a really big draw if you're wanting to make something like a stealth or horror game.
But most game developers these days are sticking to Unreal tech, and I have yet to name one recent or upcomin game (besides Doom 3) that uses the Doom 3 engine.
