Discworld MUD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All other players are protected from other players (but not from the NPCs that can cause enough trouble for the unwary).
An interesting feature of the MUD is that your prowess at various activities is based upon your skills' "bonuses", which are based upon your level in the skill and the various stats (such as strength, dexterity, and wisdom) that affect that skill, forming a weighted logarithmic relationship.
However, they provide a number of useful functions which fit well with their theme in the game.

 TMC Reviews: Discworld
To say that Discworld is 'unique' might be going too far, but it's as close to unique that any mud I've been on has ever been.
If it hadn't been for a couple of kind players, I would have been stuck wandering the mud in confusion, but once I was shown the initial ropes it was pretty easy to catch on.
Having never read the Discworld series, I cannot comment on the theme from that aspect, but as far as interesting ideas, concepts, and theories go, I just have one word to describe it: Wow.

Mappa.Mundi Magazine - Map of the Month - Mapping MUDs
The MUD is a living novel, being written in real-time by its players.
MUDs are also social spaces shared by many players who are able to interact with each other and with the environment around them.
MUD geography comprises many interlinked spaces, known as rooms, which form maze-like topologies that players can explore and use.

Murphy's law - MUD's, do you get wet?
There are four levels of people on the mud, the players, the creators, the lords and the high lords.
In general the D&D style MUDs seem to be the most popular, however the role playing MUDs have been around for a long time and don't seem to be disappearing, there just appear to be less of them.
The players are the ones who have the fun (in theory), they play with all the things which the lords, high lords and creators have done.

As far as special features of Discworld, we have a very strong emphasis on player run and player controlled aspects of the game.
MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) were born as an online extension of text adventures (now commonly referred to as Interactive Fiction (IF)) and were the first real Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs).
We have a very flat hierarchy, so people are not always jockeying to try and move up to the next abstract level in being a creator (within the creator base) and outside of this politics has little to do with your ability to rise in skill levels.
