Daikatana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daikatana is written with the Japanese kanji 大刀; these characters appeared on the cover of the game's box.
The game is based around Hiro's attempts to recover the daikatana, a task which involves travelling to a number of different times and places.
Additionally, its gameplay had many aspects that were widely disliked by players, such as an artificially limited number of saves per level and the presence of computer-controlled "sidekicks" who were an active impediment to the player.

Daikatana - PC Review - Game Revolution
Graphically, Daikatana is the ugly duckling of Quake 2's children.
Daikatana is full of every concept that could be plagiarized off other games and full of every bad idea that the designers refused to let go of.
Although occasionally they do their jobs and take some of the fire, they mostly just give you a headache as they play catch-up, get stuck or die, which is a game over.

Daikatana has very little going for it graphically, just about the only thing I did enjoy was the snow falling in the Norwegian levels.

Daikatana introduces an RPG-ish feature to FPS games with its character skill system.
As it stands, though, Daikatana has been a waste of four years of hype and delays, and is better left on the shelf till it hits the bargain bin, comes with an apology, and has a Microsoft-size AI fix.
After killing a certain number of enemies, you are given the option to increase your skill in one of five abilities: Power (the damage your weapons deliver), Attack (your rate of fire), Speed, Acro (the height of your jump), and Vitality (your maximum health limit).

Daikatana is at times such a frustrating game to play that you should expect to leave your computer in a very bad mood.
Daikatana was game designed for co-op mode and once you take the sidekicks out of the later levels (where they start having problems), the game becomes immensely fun.
Daikatana's network code isn't the best in the world, and that is not helped by the fact that everyone moves twice as fast as in Quake II.

The Quake 2 engine was good for its time, but Ion Storm just couldn't do enough to lift it to the level of today's top games, such as Unreal Tournament and Quake 3.

 IGN: Daikatana Review
Daikatana N64 delivers both shooter and RPG elements, character building, and time travel, but none of this really changes how the game ultimately plays, which is exactly like every other first-person shooter on the market, except a whole lot more clumsily.
Daikatana N64 should have remained a rental only game because you won't want to play it after a few days.
It's not unplayable by any means, and in fact there are certain portions of the game that deliver some sort of twisted play satisfaction in the same way that throwing a ball up into the air and catching it over and over does.
