Topic: D20 System

D20 System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Also, in d20 this system is consistently used for all action resolution; in prior games in the DandD family, the rules for different actions varied considerably in which dice were used and even whether high numbers or low numbers were preferable.
Rather, the core system has been presented in a variety of formats that have been adapted by various publishers (both Wizards of the Coast and third-party) to specific settings and genres, much like the "Basic Role Playing" system common to early games by veteran RPG publisher Chaosium.
The original impetus for the open licensing of the d20 system was the economics of producing role-playing games.

D20 Modern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While there are rules specific to the d20 Modern roleplaying game, the similarities between this game and other d20 system games outweigh the differences.
Due to their mutually shared core systems, a person who knows how to play Dungeons and Dragons or any other d20 System is likely to know the basic aspects of how to play a d20 Modern game as well.
The vehicle rules that were described in the game were also recomended for use with the previous d20 Modern mini-game preview Shadow Chasers (Polyhedron #150).

Because the single game system they want to see everyone use instead is their game system.
Nevermind whether their game is suited to d20 or not.
There's not really a cohesive system you can point to at the core and say "That right there, that is d20." You may as well be learning a new game when you pick up another d20 book, even though it requires the Player's Handbook.

RPGnet: The Inside Scoop on Gaming
It is not a system in its own right, but rather the superstructure of an actual system, full of spaces that will be filled with appropriate material when a game is made that expands upon it.
It takes delicate care of many of the differences, IMO, and I prefer d20 SW to d20 D&D. So...it's really ridiculous to panic over how any other d20 game will be exactly like D&D. It'll be familiar, 'cause that's the whole point, but at the same time it'll be significantly different.
Because Star Wars is a fantasy game (being set in space doesn't make it sf...the sf elements are as much trappings as medieval elements in pseudo-medieval fantasy), it's much like D&D, 'cause that's also a fantasy game.

Great Games You May Have Missed #1 - Call of Cthulhu d20 Gamegrene.com
The magic system in particular, treating spells as individual skills to be mastered by any character, works very well in rare-magic games where a "mage" character would have too much magic.
and what i mean by that is that the mechanics of how a d20 game is played, the rules, they have nothing to do with your complaints.
whether it is a BRP system, D20 system, d6, storyteller, SAGA, whatever, the GM, and the players to some degree, decide how often the rules need to be used in the game.

RPGnet: Review of Monte Cook Presents: The Year's Best D20 - 2004
The creation of the D20 system and the Open Game License, as I've stated before, has been a blessing and a curse to role players all over the globe.
As a player and DM that has never been completely sold on the concept of Metamagic (as I tend to allow players to alter their spells for "flavor"), it was nice to read some variants on Metamagic that can make a caster interesting and unique without sacrificing their own spells or choices.
Intended or not, another benefit of The Year’s Best D20 is that it will expose you to game designers and companies that you may have passed on due to their subject matter or lack of marketing.

d20 is good to bring more games to the masses I suppose, but it's a specialist game niche and I suspect always will be.
FFG dropped the game to put there entire line under the d20 umbrella (I was told this by someone that pays more attention to these things that I), so we the consumer miss out on what was (allegedly) a great game and setting.

Hero System vs. d20 - HERO GAMES Discussion Boards
The system is, in my opinion, more flexible than d20 for the different genres - I've run superhero, fantasy, science fiction, and secret agent games in the past, with a foray into magical/cyberpunk/western/mutant - rather odd campaign that we only used once.
As d20 progresses it becomes wider in scope and the rules become more swap-ible but it still has a long way to go before many mechanics become more universal.
In d20, if you wanted to play a one armed character because you thought it would be cool, then the DM would just shrug.
