 D20 Modern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While there are rules specific to the d20 Modern roleplaying game, the similarities between this game and other d20 system games outweigh the differences.
Due to their mutually shared core systems, a person who knows how to play Dungeons and Dragons or any other d20 System is likely to know the basic aspects of how to play a d20 Modern game as well.
This is the first campaign I personally played as GM, and my friends, playing d20 modern for the first time, liked it, even though we were playing with slightly annoying people so I advise this for beginning players/Gamemasters.

Despite all the limitations that d20 rules give to the players (with classes, limited skills, feats, and rigid rules), the players are actually more free, because they suffer the GM's arbitrium less.
To sum it up, d20 gives players a lot of control over their characters -- a control that, given the stiffness of the d20 ruleset, the game master has not.
d20 is a system designed to please the player, as opposed to the GM.

On the other hand, I must be in a game of it at some point, so that I can play a Gundancer (John Woo-style two fisted brawler/gunman PrC).
The might do a "sort futuristic" setting like something cyberpunkish, but they are so paranoid about self-competition that I do not see them making a space opera type game.
"Modern" and future armor does not increase the difficulty to hit, it absorbs some amount of damage.

When d20 Modern came out, one of its clear limitations was that it contained little if any material for gamers who wanted to go beyond near-future settings.
What I really like about d20 Modern, is that it covers a whole lot of ground - while it might not be the best at what it does, it can handle just about any sort of modern day game out of the box (er, book).
In D20 Modern, I think of talents are sort of "super-feats" so it's odd that if you take a feat, you get two talents.

I own a boatload of Polyhedron magazines and the d20 Modern hardbacks, but I don't know if there are good sites or PDF products that are good resources for the game.
Odds are it will be an Urban Arcana/Shadow Chasers-style game set in modern day.

In fact many of the open license fantasy games are using the D20 modern system, instead of the more fantasy geared D20 base.
Though, if you are doing espionage or like that style of play you may find Spycraft (and the upcoming Spycraft II) to be more your cup of tea because it will fit your play style better.
Also, RPG's have this tendency to go out of print so I tend to buy when I see something that interests me before it disappears.

I've found people who won't play with a certain set of rules aren't very good players because they are too busy trying to decode the "intricacies" of the rules and they are damned hard to please overall.
My players didn't really take to HERO either, so for their sake, I use the d20 based Mutants and Masterminds as my main ruleset, but I still get a lot of use out of all my HERO sourcebooks and supplements.
We have a couple of players in my gaming group who just can't stand the Hero System, so I'm switching my campaign over to D20 Modern.

Again, to comment on the rules, they involve very little new concepts, but are rather integrated into existing d20 Modern framework (the example I commonly cite for d20 Modern is the absence of odd numbers of damage dice, in keeping with the rules for automatic and burst fire).
One notable stat I do think is missed is the Crew Quality rating, which is buried in the vehicular combat rules of d20 Modern and easy to miss.
It may not be enough to run an entire campaign with, but Encyclopedia Vanguard makes a useful supplement for any military-themed, American or Soviet-heavy d20 Modern game.

Eventually you say, just because other games are better, doesn't mean d20 Modern isn't good.
You go on about the game's "cinematic" qualities.
I say it's because WotC compromised the game to accomodate D&D elements better (it was due to use an SW-style VP/WP system until they found this was incompatible with D&D monsters and spells), and to generally be more supernatural-tastic, an attempt to corner the market for modern-day magical games with the d20 system.

This is a relatively new game set in the modern world where our world meets the fantasy world, but the books dont give you any set story, just ideas you can use, now I am the Game Master of this particular game, and I just wrote this world into existence, tell me what you think.
The book portrays 1990-2000 or so in this world, becomeing adapted to magic, with all that it implies.
