Gamasutra - Features - "GDC 2003: How to Build a Better Cutscene"
Cutscenes allow players to take a break from their efforts and just be entertained, so anytime a player completes a difficult task, a cutscene can act as a kind of reward.
Some games have so many cutscenes, or such long cutscenes, that you have to wonder whether the game designers had a movie in mind instead of a game.
And then there are those games with such boring, confusing, ill-conceived cutscenes that it would have been better if they hadn't bothered making any cutscenes at all.

Gamasutra - Features - "Better Game Design Through Cutscenes" [04.01.02]
Cutscenes are meant to portray activities happening in the game world, and lose all power if the player views them as dislocated from or irrelevant to that world.
New cutscenes can often be one of the most tangible rewards for a player's completing any goal within a game.
It is possible to use a cutscene, most often Machinima cutscenes, to portray conversations between the player character and non-player characters, without the possibility for player interaction except at occasional key points.

the cutscene is an essential part of a game’s rhetorical and intertextual address to the player, a dimension of ...
In his excellent article about configurative mechanisms in games, The Gaming Situation [5], Markku Eskelinen rightly points out, drawing on Espen Aarseths well-known typology of cybertexts, that playing a game is predominantly a configurative practice, not an interpretative one like film or literature (page 1-2).
The most accentuated expression of such an impure duality is found in the oscillation between cutscenes and play in typical story-based action games.
I argue that any game event is also a representational event, a part of a typical and familiar symbolic action, in which cutscenes often play a crucial part.

 Creating MotS Style Cutscenes
With the Mysteries of the Sith add-on pack, the cutscenes changed from video to being "acted" out by the graphics engine of the game itself.
The cutscene will exit to an external view (like pressing F1), show a message that it has been activated, then the camera will rotate 360 degrees around the player, while playing a sound.
The player will start in that room, walk up to the console, activate it (by pressing the space bar) and then the cutscene will begin.

 BioWare Forums: Cutscenes and cinematics
Since Bioware is all about the story, I doubt that they'll ever make another game without cutscenes.
One benefit would be that the cutscenes and gameplay would meld together rather than seeming like two seperate things.
With the onset of normal mapped characters and next generation graphics many a 3d artist that works in cinematics for games is starting to wonder what the future holds for the cinematics we see as common today.

Final Fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After these PS2 sequels, there has not been a new true sequel yet, at least in the Final Fantasy sense ( Final Fantasy X-2 would be a dictionary sequel, but any new game in the series is technically yet another number and sequel).
The Job system returns; each player can change his or her job in town.
Final Fantasy X-2 sported similar graphics as Final Fantasy X, with pop-singer cutscenes (

 Playable Levels with Cutscenes
Before you are thrown into the game, you are introduced to the general story with a sequence of cutscenes that lasts about 20 minutes.
Probably the best usage of cutscenes for a level pack, unlike others, the cutscenes are shown inbetween levels, not during levels.
The other cutscenes didn't really add to the feel of the game.

RTX Red Rock Designer Diary #2 - RTX Red Rock Previews for PlayStation 2 at GameSpot
I think the game player will notice the difference.
In-engine cutscenes take place in real time in the game engine.
We've worked very hard to try to make sure that the transitions from gameplay to cutscene and then back to gameplay are as smooth as possible.

 Ludology.org: I love cutscenes
Cutscenes set the mood, set the background and help to understand the behaviors of the games (for example, recognizing the bad guys; suggesting what your strategies for defense may be, etc).
To make a long story short, for the record, cutscenes are important and needed in games.
The problem, as usual, comes when game designers play Hollywood directors.

 [No title]
We've already decided that the cutscene is going to take place behind a window so we'll need to make a level with, say, two corridors next to each other and a window in the middle.
The very first thing you have to do is decide just what type of cutscene this is going to be....
It's important to establish this early on otherwise the player may get slightly confused when they expect the cutscene to finish only to suddenly launch into another few minutes.

Atari Forums - New cutscenes - Antaran Xs
This is meant to replace the cutscene in the game, the one with an X spinning for a couple of seconds.
I think I´ll use them in the next cutscene..

IGN Boards - What happened to my cutscenes?
I heard that if you push one of the buttons on the PS2 while the cutscene was playing, the game skips it...is that what happened?
Did my game DVD screw up or is there some kinda exotic bug going around that I just so stumbled upon.
The intimate scene in the baths, the kissing and the rewinding all sounds GREAT but I've beaten PoP twice on PS2 and I still didn't see any of that in my game.

and can i make cutscenes in there aswel, like an intro movie that upon ending wil also enable you to play ( like the first level of kingpin)
The reason why this is so is beacause of switches and different event handling built into negotiating different NPC's and enemies...

Neverwinter Nights: Cutscenes Questions / Assistance
I know a lot of this is scripting experience, that why I'm asking to the experienced for suggestions/recommendations/reading material on go, quality cutscenes advice that would accomplish what I'm looking to do.
In that case, x2_inc_cutscene contains some functions that make the timing in a cutscene easier, and you could also check out Gestalt's cutscene system.
I've been beating my head on this one for a while and, frankly, either I do not quite understand how Cutscenes work or what I'm trying to do is not possible.

 Interview: Elonka Dunin
The coolest cutscenes in the world won't save a boring game.
With regard to "communal chant," I know Simutronics set up a Crisis Center the day after the September 11 attacks to offer information and updates for the members of the online communities, tell me more about that.

Ninja Gaiden - Video Game Reviews - Gaming Articles
If you thought you've seen a pretty game before, then you haven't seen nothing yet.
You can guess that if the in-game graphics are superb then the cutscenes are even better.

wine-bugs mailing list: [Bug 2220] New: Grim Fandango won't advance to cutscenes
It is not hung, as the menu can still be accessed to quit/load/save/change prereneces etc. It isn't that the cutscens won't play at all--if you start from a save game past the cutscene, you can play the cutscenes you're already past just fine.

StarsiegeUniverse - Because Red-Five is so damn sexy it hurts.
There is also a cinematic style trailer available that displays some brief dialogue and brief snippets of a few single player levels and cutscenes.
To date only three missions have been revealed.
As to the course of the plot, although it is purely speculative, my best guess is that the story revolves around a desperate gambit by the Children of Phoenix leader Daniel to stave of the economic collapse of his Tribe by kidnapping the Emperor.

 Neverwinter Nights: Film Cutscenes
John Bye spend a great deal of time and effort (I guess) putting it together, just give it a try and do give John credit if you decide to use it.
Can someone tell me how to create film cutscenes (like in HoTU campaign when you look through the crystal) in the toolset and how to film action ingame?
