Console manufacturer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "first-mover advantage" that certain console manufacturers experience on the other hand is a somewhat risky strategy.
It is also known as a first-party video game publisher.
It has often been said that when it comes to a console's success: "its all about the games" and this is certainly true.

Gamasutra - Features - "Developing Online Console Games" Printer Friendly
Console players tend to play with their friends, and they tend to play in a more social atmosphere.
It's no secret that the typical console player is different from a typical PC game player.
Console game players don't care about round-trip ping time, they don't run traceroutes, they don't know an IP address from a P.O. address, and they certainly don't want to configure routers.

 Game Pilgrimage
Recognizing a quality game, regardless of which console it was made for, and even if you don't necessarily enjoy playing it, is what Game Pilgrimage is all about.
If you owned a console that was the most popular of its generation, the media stood right behind you, exaggerating the good qualities of your console of choice and its games, and then turning around by being overly critical of any shortcomings, real or imagined, of the flagging competition.
Typically speaking, you also concluded that the competing console had no games you wanted to play, or at least not enough to warrant the purchase.

During the planned life of a game console, console manufacturers reap the bulk of their profits from video game sales.

For the college crowd, having one console that plays one's older game library as well as the new may be a selling point, but then again, so is buying a console that can play DVDs and save space.
There are two main arguments for including backward compatibility in a console: the first is that gamers who own your old console can "upgrade" and still play their old games along with the new ones.
Likewise, should games be written modular enough that decent expansion sets can be written for newer consoles, such that one can play the old game better, then I can very well see where backwards compatibility will have a major effect on the console market.
