Topic: Check-raise

Check-raise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While it is an important part of poker strategy, in some home games and certain small-stakes casino games, this play is not allowed.
This might be done, for example, when the first player believes that an opponent has an inferior hand and will not call a direct bet, but that he may attempt to bluff, allowing the first player to win more money than he would by betting straightforwardly.
A check-raise in poker is a common deceptive play in which a player checks early in a betting round, hoping someone else will open.

 Theory of Poker Excerpt
Well, check raising is devious and it is deceitful, but being devious and deceitful is precisely what one wants to be in a poker game, as is implied by the Fundamental Theorem of Poker.
Check raising and slowplaying are two ways of playing a strong hand weakly to trap your opponents and win more money from them.
Check raising is checking your hand with the intention of raising on the same round after an opponent bets.

Sandbagging (poker) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In games with many betting rounds, such as stud poker and community card poker games, one can make multiple-round sandbagging plays.
Sandbagging (also called slow play) is deceptive play in poker that is roughly the opposite of bluffing: betting weakly with a strong holding rather than betting strongly with a weak one.
This play is best when there are several players behind you, and they are the kind of player likely to call one bet but not a raise.

 The Check-Raise Bluff
For example, if players are calling or raising with hands such as K-Q, small pairs, or weak aces (which is quite common in most $15-$30 and $20-$40 games, based on my observation), they will be hard-pressed to call a check-raise, even when they might hold a pair.
Finally, if the check-raise bluff fails and you are forced to show the bluff, you will probably have to readjust your thinking at the table and play a very solid (unimaginative) game from that point on.
You check the flop and a player in late position bets.

Poker Strategy: Stud Poker Strategy: Check Raising, part two.
If, for example, you check raise a bettor who is right in front of you, then the other players in the game have already called his bet before your raise - making it likely that they will call your raise as well.
This is because few players will fold for a single raise when they have called a single bet already in a betting round.
If Sam the raiser is to your right, however, there's no reason to check-raise, since your raise will likely knock out the other players and you'll be playing heads up.

 Poker Tutorial: Quiz
Notice that if the pre-flop raiser raises your bet (and he will raise if he has an overpair), the rest of the field is going to be looking at calling two bets cold.
By raising on the flop you're basically announcing that you've flopped big; this makes it less likely that someone will 'make a play' at you on the turn (by check raising you, or by lead betting) if a scare card comes, since they'll figure you're going to the river with your big hand anyway.
If you call the flop, then lead bet the turn, the pre-flop raiser may just call your turn bet with a hand as big as an overpair, since he may be afraid that you've slowplayed a monster (which in fact you have).

UPF - Check-Raising in No Limit
Typically a check raise is to get more into the pot and flush out some weaker player who have already called.
I do not think this is the answer to your question, but I think since in limit you have the max bet limitation, the check raise can maximize your winnings if you have a great hand, the nut or a good bluff.
I no limit if you check raise, that person can come over the top of you and essentially make you fold if the bet it too great for your cards.

 Texas Holdem
A passive player frequently checks and calls or checks and folds after the flop and does not push the betting with an advantage; conversely, an aggressive player often raises for a variety of reasons after the flop with an advantage.
If they think are you a tight player, they will be less inclined to call your raises; if they think you are an overly-aggressive player who frequently raises with marginal hands, they will be more inclined to call.
A tight player plays premium hands, has high standards for calling raises; conversely, a loose player often limps in (calls before the flop without raising) and cold-calls (calling a raise without raising) more often than is correct.

As you undoubtedly know, the vast majority of the time the other players will check to the raiser - it's done so often that the saying is a part of poker lore.
How you play your hand at that point "talks" to the other players and you need to remember that you might want to "say" something different, which is what we call a bluff.
You raised, which indicates a "big" hand and if you can somehow convince your opponent that you hold a hand that can beat a pair of Aces, you can likely make him or her fold.

While the idea of using the check raise to knock players out usually applies to those situations where you expect the bet to come from your right, this second concept applies to hands where the bet will likely come from your left.
Our hero was in the big blind with the As 5s in a.50-1$ game, and watched as four players called the opening bet.
In a hand like this, where you have top pair in a big pot and a fairly coordinated board, you are almost always better off going for a check raise as opposed to betting out.

So, you bet out, and if the pre-flop raiser makes it two bets you take the good with the bad—some hands fold that you’re glad are out, and some hands fold that you wish had stayed in.
Now you raise, the pre-flop raiser three bets, and two of the callers drop out (leaving you in a four handed pot).
Since a raise by the pre-flop raiser won’t knock anyone out, you decide to go for a check raise, and hopefully trap the field for multiple bets.

There are two basic ways to balance your bluff bets: you can check a lot of made hands along with your busted hands, or you can bet a lot of your busted hands along with your made hands.
In game theory, we would say that the "lots of betting" approach weakly dominates the "lots of checking" approach; they may be equivalent against an optimal opponent, but "lots of betting" offers the most opportunities for suboptimal players to make mistakes.
RIVER BETTING: If you thin value bet (or value check-raise) and are raised, pay off virtually always; otherwise, if you are willing to fold not only your bluffs but also made hands to raises, you'll allow your opponent to bluff-raise you to death.
