Around 800 Chatrang-namak (Matigan-i-chatrang) was written in Pahlavi about the history of chatrang and the introduction of the game into Persia during the time of Khusraw I, who ruled from 531 to 578, giving increasing clarity to the history of chess.
For chess history the text mentions that Ardashir was skilled at the game called Chatrang.
The first possible reference to Chatrang (later becoming shatranj), the Persian word for chess, was The Karnamak-i-Artakhshatr-i-Papakan (The Records of Ardashir, son of Papak).

 Introducing Variant Chess
The 8 by 8 game originated in India as Chaturanga some time before 550, was taken up in Persia as Chatrang, and then by the Islamic empire as Shatranj.
It spread through Europe from about 1100 with minor modifications to the rules, until it metamorphosed into the modern form shortly before 1500.

The Persian word for chess is Chatrang, which was later changed by the Arabs to Shatranj.
The evidence of the Persians having borrowed this game from India is seen in the name the Persians gave to it.
As said in Encyclopedia Britannica, thig word is obviously a corruption of the Sanskrit original Chaturanga.
