Champions of Norrath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Champions of Norrath (CoN) is an online-capable role-playing game for the PlayStation 2, set in the EverQuest universe.
CoN has a typical CRPG storyline, in which the player acts as a hero who must save the world and the girl.
It is playable with one player, however, with a PlayStation Network Adapter, players can take the game online with others.

Champions of Norrath - Playstation 2 (PS2) Reviews - The Armchair Empire
Now comes Snowblind's Champions of Norrath, a game from the same design team that put together the excellent Dark Alliance, and Champions of Norrath is so good and so deep as to put the previous games in the genre to shame.
Champions of Norrath doubles Dark Alliance's limit of two players in co-op mode, allowing four intrepid adventurers to gather around the same console and hack and slash together.
Though it is possible, and enjoyable, to play through the game alone, since Gauntlet, much of the joy of this style of game has been in the multi-player experience.

RPGFan Reviews - Champions of Norrath
The game's graphics are one of the highpoints of the Champions of Norrath experience.
In fact, Champions of Norrath is actually worse than PSO when it comes to online play for a number of reasons.
While the engine and the core gameplay remain largely unchanged from the first game, everything about Champions of Norrath is bigger than that earlier title.

 Gamenikki
Champions of Norrath, as I mentioned, can be played either with three companions via the multitap, or online with up to three other players as well, and the way the game is designed, you'd be well-advised to make use of that capability.
That isn't to say that it doesn't contribute to the game, but you're not going to fire Champions of Norrath up time and again to find out what happens next.
There are a couple of things I would have done differently (and what critic worth the name would say otherwise?), but by and large, Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest is a winner.

DailyGame Review: Champions of Norrath [PS2]
Champions of Norrath is a game that you'll want to play with people you know and trust, since the game leaves too many open opportunities for people who only want to make your life miserable, which, if you've ever played an online game, you'll know there are plenty of out there.
For all intents and purposes, Champions of Norrath might as well still be set in the Forgotten Realms, but despite the blurry lines that differentiate all these different high-fantasy continuums, and despite some of the game's rather evident problems, it's still the best game of its kind to come to consoles in years.
Aside from the single-player game, Champions also features a co-op mode that can be played either on- or offline with up to four players.

Champions of Norrath (PS2) Reviews on Darkstation
Champions of Norrath is actually both a single and multiplayer title; the game can be played both online and off.
Champions of Norrath is a game that truly does a great job with detail.
Champions of Norrath is an Action RPG that truly feels and plays very similar to Dark Alliance.

Viewing Review @ Video Game City
Champions should take most seasoned gamers about thirty hours to complete and slightly more for the casual folks, but what makes the game great aside from a nice random dungeon generator, is that you have the option of playing with a friend, or going online.
The plot that you follow in Champions of Norrath is not as deep as most games of the genre, but this is not an issue considering that EverQuest has always relied on its lore to outline its games rather than fleshed out storylines.
Just like that game, Champions requires no prior knowledge of the series for you to be able to enjoy it and it also expands the lore of Norrath for those who do play the PC online RPG.

Champions of Norrath encompasses many of the familiar lands of EverQuest and is set several hundred years before the timeline of the current EverQuest PC game.

GamingWorld X - Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest Review
As a whole, Champions is a challenging game, requiring players to not only use the much-forgotten block button, but also to use some strategy when facing numerous foes.
In Champions of Norrath, players will still be customizing away when they are on the hardest difficulty setting.
As a champion called forth to help rid Norrath of a devastating evil — one that can even unite orcs and goblins, who were once mortal enemies — players will trek across the lands, hacking and slashing their way through hundreds of enemies both big and small, ugly and uglier.

 ChampionsNorrath
Champions of Norrath includes ranged weapons such as arches and arrows in addition to it's standard weapons, these can be used to attack enemies from afar, and players can also auto-target foes as well.
Champions of Norrath can be challenging, but there are some aids that can help make the quest easier.
The single-player game is quite fun and enjoyable and you can do a lot of damage on your own, then team up with other players online once you have the experience and equipment to make inroads in the main game.

Champions of Norrath - Reviews - Stratos Group
At this point in time, Champions of Norrath is the epitome of hack-and-slash gaming.
CoN’s gameplay might not be what fanatical RPG gamers are looking for, but the game makes no claims to being a story-driven RPG.
A champion of Norrath you may be, invincible you are not.

Frictionless Insight - Champions of Norrath Review
CoN isn’t miserly in its distribution of such ability points, so while there are two or three reasonable configurations for each character, no character is a one-trick pony, and little is lost through experimentation.
Even though players will be familiar with the game’s mostly linear path after a single time through, the temptation to play the game (all the way through) just one more time with a different type of character is enormous.
CoN is decidedly designed for multiplayer play, with a diverse party facing peril together.

Champions of Norrath - PlayStation 2 Review
Champions of Norrath takes place in the Everquest universe, so many of the locations and characters in the game will be familiar to fans of the MMORPG.
Champions of Norrath’s difficulty steadily ramps up as your character becomes more powerful and the constant challenge helps to keep the game fresh.
The subtle differences between it and other games of the genre make Champions of Norrath more satisfying and enjoyable than those games that came before it.

 Champions of Norrath - Review
The story of Champions is typical, and just strong enough to keep the game moving.
The gameplay in all three of these games is similar, but Champions stands out as the best entry into the genre to date.
As the story evolves, ties between the evil races of Norrath emerge, and the player moves from realm to realm battling progressively more powerful enemies.

GameGal.com, Video game news reviews, girl gamers, playstation, xbox, gamecube
Champions of Norrath can be an engrossing game if you’re looking for a button-masher with a little depth – and with co-op play, it makes a great party game if you’re in the mood for some classic arcade-style action.
Action RPGs like Champions of Norrath take the button-mashing and group play of Gauntlet, but add a real storyline and much more strategy and variety.
The best analogy we can think of is to paint Champions as a modern-day version of the classic action game Gauntlet.

Champions Of Norrath Sony Play Station 2 Video Game Review by AceGamez
The multiplayer, both on and offline adds immensely to the enjoyment factor and as long as the players are on a fairly even footing level wise, the difficulty remains spot on throughout the 20-30 hours play time.
Champions Of Norrath Sony Play Station 2 Video Game Review by AceGamez
The characters are nicely customisable and with such a huge range of weapons and armour, each altering their physical appearance, every champion looks different - especially useful for the multiplayer modes.

TotalGames.net - Champions Of Norrath: Realms Of Everquest
Norrath is the better game in many ways.
There's also a point to be made about the recent release of the game's sequel and how you've now got a choice between to excellent titles.
This theory makes great sense right up to the moment when you play Champions of Norrath with three other people via a multi-tap.

 GameSpy.com - Preview
Norrath is the realm the myriad EverQuest games take place in; it's a fantasy realm of the most typical sort, populated by elves, ogres, humans, and others -- a medieval template that may lack some personality but is a fertile ground that satisfies hundreds of thousands of online gamers with its comfortable reliability.
To create character variety, each of these ten possible heroes has his or her own unique set of armor, and the designs on display in the current version of the game -- which is well behind what will be in the final version -- are simply too cool.
Offering online and offline single and multiplayer modes, Champions of Norrath is SOE's first game with offline capability and the PS2's first Phantasy Star Online -style dungeon hack.

Curmudgeon Gamer - Review: Champions of Norrath
Check the ratings, a few comment's from you geeks doesn't mean anything to the gaming industry or the millions who play CoN, and despite the fact that you think it's a flaw I know you still play it.
So everyone will spend more time in one of the two far views where the graphics didn't have to be so detailed in the first place, and effort could have been diverted to something more important, like gameplay.
Yet, the up close view is useless except to appreciate the graphics: no one actually plays the game at this level of zoom.

 PlayMoreConsoles.com Review Champions of Norrath
For those of you worried about the length of the game don’t, CoN has a total of 5 chapters that are quite long and will keep you playing for hours.
The clink and clank of blades colliding sound realistic and the background music for the game is subdued when necessary and is perfectly suited for the game.
Also, while it’s not required to play, you really need the headset communicator (as I found out), most games specify headset only and if you don’t have one its fairly chaotic playing as everyone usually has their own agenda and tend to go in different directions.

 WORTHPLAYING - - All about games !
The game starts off with a CG sequence showing that Norrath is looking for heroes to save the land, a typical way for these adventure games to start out.
Set several hundred years before the timeline of the current EverQuest PC game, Champions of Norrath allows gamers to adventure as one of five playable characters who must journey from the city of Faydwer into the wilds of Norrath to save the land from a gathering army of evil orcs and goblins.
The difference is the skills in which the gamer chooses to invest; Champions utilizes a skill point system similar to that found in Diablo II.

Champions of Norrath - ps2 Review - Game Revolution
The delivery also keeps you playing, as Champions of Norrath is a very pretty game.
But that’s okay, because the point of Champions of Norrath is not to immerse you in a brilliant story - it’s to immerse you in tons of enemies to kill, items to find and stats to increase.
With great looks and addictive play, Champions of Norrath marks the next step in the evolution of the action RPG genre, even if it isn’t exactly new.

 [No title]
The game has been designed so that you don’t have to play on your own, as traipsing through endless forests and dungeons tends to wear a little thin when you’re on your own.
For the teamplay element, you can play through the story with a mate, or three others if you’ve got a multitap.
If you’re a true Everquest fan (and therefore have no real friends) then the game also features a lovely online mode (which we’ll come to later), where you, and up to three other virtual champions can go through the story together.

Champions: Return to Arms (PS2) Reviews on Darkstation
But by far for those of you who remember Champions of Norrath's online components will be happy to know that this is where most of the major improvements in the game have taken place.
When we look back at Champions of Norrath, we see a game that closely resembled Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and with that being said it contained an overview third person view that really looked quite good.
The graphics also fall into this category as this game almost looks identical to Champions of Norrath.

Champions: Return to Arms Review on PlayStation 2
Champions: Return to Arms is more of the same but with enough differences to keep old fans pleased and new gamers ready to jump into the fray.
By now you should be familiar with a little game called EverQuest and its world of Norrath - a world the first game and Return to Arms uses as its playground and fills it with some recognizable enemies and allies.
Last year’s Champions of Norrath was a treat indeed so you can’t blame a girl for looking forward to Champions: Return to Arms.

ELiTeD - Champions of Norrath Review
Dungeons and monsters are randomly generated, this will make the game unique each time you play.
To start the game you can choose from one of five champions: Barbarian Warrior, Dark Elf Shadow Knight, High Elf Cleric, Erudite Wizard, and Wood Elf Ranger (male or female).
Dark Alliance brought a mix of hack-n-slash and DandD to role playing games.

Unfortunately, because the game is designed for four players, the camera is set at a relatively high angle.
Mostly you're waiting ten to fifteen seconds for the game to load when you enter a different area.
Combining the better elements of both genres has created a new breed of game that appeals to a broader audience.

Nevertheless, Champions of Norrath still comes out on top by focusing on the little things that have otherwise been avoided on the consoles -- little things such as character creation and customization, randomly made dungeon maps, and cooperative online play.
It certainly hasn’t revolutionized the genre, but it’s pushing the genre in the direction it should be going and in the end, that’s almost as good.

REVIEWS: 'Champions of Norrath,' 'Zoo Tycoon 2,' 'Star Fox Assault'
But last year's "Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest" is in stores for $20 -- and if you haven't played that, you can save yourself $30 by skipping this one and buying it instead.
I don't think I've ever given such a low rating to a game that looked and played so smoothly.
If you have played "Realms of Everquest," well, be warned: You've got a couple new playable characters (whose spells and melee look an awful lot like previous characters, though one gets to dual-wield weapons).

Baldur`s Gate: Dark Alliance II Review at Next Level Gaming!
Multi console gamers are going to flock to Champions of Norrath, and Xbox owners will definately want to stick with this game.
And even beyond that, Dark Alliance II is only 2 players, where Champions supports 4 players.
Now, the Xbox will be the place that Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II will shine, because even though DA II also doesn't support Xbox Live, There isn't a game in it's genre on the Xbox that does, so the playing field is even.

Lords of EverQuest was their attempt at a real-time strategy game, but by and large it was a mediocre attempt that did little to differentiate itself from dozens of strategy games to come before it.
Though this is purely optional, those who pass up the money they can gain by doing this will find the road ahead to be a good deal tougher.
Gaining a level will allow you to place a few points in your primary statistics, and will also give you skill points to place in skills.
