Computer role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Computer role-playing games (CRPGs), often shortened to simply (RPGs), are a type of video or computer game that uses traditional gameplay elements found in pen-and-paper role-playing games.
While not a pure CRPG, the game Diablo 2 has the Warrior be the one who defeated Diablo in the first game, although the player has to fight all three "former heros" during the course of the game.)
These CRPGs are often based directly on the rules and settings of pen and paper game systems (Dungeons and Dragons being the most common), sometimes even displaying die rolls and other game mechanics normally hidden from players' eyes.

I didn't think it was great CRPG, but it was a decent action/adventure game.
Slaying orcs is the engine of most CRPGs' economies (if you stop slaying orcs, you will starve) and combat is the only time you are really *playing* a game in the sense that one *plays* Quake or *plays* Age of Empires (i.e.
All CRPGs are geared toward combat to “move” through the game.

 The CRPG Genre Part 1
Some CRPGs have attempted to create such a world in which the player can form his own adventures but this is a very tall order to do in a computer game compared to making a directed adventure with some RPG elements or a dungeon crawl for treasure and character level advancement.
However, Darklands broke new ground from the point of view of CRPG design and many of its features were used in many later games.
There are problems with the game balance and mechanics, players can exploit the character system so that after 10th level the game loses any challenge.

With a good CRPG, all the elements have to come together...the graphics should be reasonable enough for players to recognize objects within the game world.
The last CRPG I actually played long enough to beat was Dungeon Siege, and that was only because I found the Yoda/Lightsaber mods.
Developers are so busy competing to be unique and have their game stand out in a crowded market they forget to put more than a few elements into it to make it complete.

RPGnet: The Inside Scoop on Gaming
But still CRPG's are less diverse, there are only so many CRPG game engines out there, as compared to the hundreds of RPG systems.
Because of this, from a technical perspective, CRPG's will not be as complex as a pen and paper game.
I think if the CRPG publishers had the ability (or time, or money, or technology, etc.) to mimic a pen and paper game completely they would.

Interview with Feargus Urquhart, Designer of Fallout 2
As for the difference in gameplay, I think a lot of it has to do with the evolution of players - the game needs to be easy to play.
The first CRPG that I played was Temple of Apshai by Epyx, I think.
While most CRPG's offer a fantasy setting, both Fallout games offered something different: a post-apocalyptic setting that had brilliant flashes of dark humor throughout.

Neverwinter Nights: WHAT DEFINES A GOOD CRPG ? - TUTORIAL PART I (non-trollish post)
Again, the CRPG player tends to like his battles a bit more slow-paced, tactiful and strategic than the likes of Diablo, which are more prone to the casual or younger player.
The CRPG player tends to be a bit more mature and to like his/her reading better than the average console action game teenager.
And a crpg HAS to have the single palyer party, because not everyone can or wants to multiplay, AND playing solo leads to a diablo game, with NO tactics, and NO challenge, again like diablo where you can easily kill 3000 enemies if you're powerful enough.

Lora's CRPG Reviews: Fun Computer Role-Playing Games for Busy People
My own CRPG walkthroughs are written so as to let you know whether you've missed any cool quests or side plots or other things to do in any of the game areas without giving away what happens when you do them.
This classic CRPG trilogy shows its age in its turn-based combat and chunky isometric graphics, but somehow it's still fun a decade later-- and unlike many older games, it plays straight out of the box (no SloMo or painstaking computer reconfigurations necessary).
This is the closest a CRPG has ever come to matching my criteria: fantastic quests that encourage lateral thinking, a rich gaming environment, memorable NPCs, and strong character development, including deeply interactive subplots with NPCs who remember reactions you had to them five conversations ago.

Only a Game: Where Next With CRPGs
The flaw in most Japanese CRPGs is that they are more concerned in telling their story than in giving the player freedom of expression.
We were working under heavy restrictions, such as the fact the game had to remain in a linear structure (there wasn't time for a more open structure), and the fact that the underlying game was always going to be a hack and slash.
The flaw in most Western Japanese CRPGS is that they are more concerned in giving the player freedom of expression than avoiding being total rubbish.

While there are a few characters in the game that players can fight, most of the game (as most adventure games in general) involves picking up various items in order to solve puzzles.
Certainly one of the most important CRPGs from a gameplay perspective is Richard Garriot's Akalabeth: World of Doom (Apple II, 1980) a prequel to the first Ultima game.
Video games and computer games, much like film, have a rich history and it is through playing old and new games that one gains a greater appreciation of the medium as a whole.

Obsidian Forum Community -> What makes a cRPG?
Top-down or isometric games are closer to the original map-drawing and figurine viualization of pandp, while first person games try to depict what the imagination of the pandp players saw.
Another branching in the CRPG world is that between party based and single player.
When computer role playing games came up they naturally were attempts to take this style of gaming to the computer.

Among all this, I continue to view Wizardry as a foundation where all the elements and gameplay of the CRPG genre are in focus.
Other CRPGs come and go, but Wizardry is the series you can really sink your teeth into.

Unfettered Blather / Unchanged Genres Part 1 - Computer Role Playing Games
A well done CRPG practically lets the player tell the story, or at least lets the story unfold at the prompting of the player if nothing else.
But there have been a lot of "loser" CRPGs that were not elves and magic, too, and I think the problem is that studios and maybe publishers feel that other genres are more risky.
The focus may rest more of ranged combat than most CRPG designers are comfortable with, but the setting also comes with many known factors.

The Codex Forums :: View topic - Party control in CRPG's: Good or Bad?
In conclusion, I think, out of the many ways of doing party based CRPG's, have a party of Player Characters seems to be the best, as it can provide more depth, and has some degree of logical justification (the player is the party itself).
In CRPG's, party based, with characters created by the player, can be a good option, probably the best, considering the alternatives for party control.
Player created party is a step toward strategic squad-based games where you have combat units with specific skills useful in certain situations lacking any personality or connection to a player.

The game wants to give the player total freedom and is compared to Diablo, in the sense that Diablo doesn't end when the game is over and you can keep going back to discover new things, progress further with your character and so on and so forth.
However, these are only the first looks at a game that is at the beginning of its development, we'll see how it goes.
You know, with all those post-apoc games and mods that are or were in development, you'd expect the market to be literally flooded by them, yet somehow the last memorable CRPG with post-apoc theme was Fallout II.

Sorry, but I think the limitation with CRPGs is the limited nature of interacting with the gameworld.
However, it shouldn't feel arbitrary to the player - in either tabletop or CRPGs.
Yes, it's limited in its interaction options - but it's still forcing the player to address premise, and giving you 10-30 seconds at each stage in the tree - long enough to ensure you're not being driven into split-second decisions.

RPG's aren't RPG's without Virtual Hero Doll Dress Up? - BioWare's Official Jade Empire Site
Virtual Hero Doll Dress Up as you call it is an RPG element, but that doesn't mean a game has to include it to be an RPG.
So many of you out there feel that Jade isn't an RPG because you can't change your clothes etc. Some CRPG's feature this kind of dress up gaming and some don't (for the record I enjoy VHD-DUG as much as the next nerd but it isn't a requirement for my definition of CRPG).
The point of contention: An RPG really isn't an RPG if it doesn't feature 'Virtual Hero Doll Dress Up Gameplay'(VHD-DUG).
