Brian Fargo: The Bard's Tale was my first real big RPG hit so it seemed appropriate to launch inXile around a game by the same name.
Brian Fargo: The Bard's Tale is an action/role-playing game with gameplay similar to Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but with humor and personality at every turn.
It was the first first-person dungeon game that had color, music, and animation, and it really captured the essence of the old-school role-playing games.

In 2002, Brian Fargo left Interplay to start a new company, inXile Entertainment — their first project was a new game entitled, you guessed it, “The Bard's Tale.” (This new Bard's Tale is an irreverent console-style top-down action game.)

Brian was also prompted to detail differences between the original games and the latest iteration, with his response citing a goal of creating a title with more depth, personality and style.
We well know the RPG conventions of stats, leveling up, tactical and strategic combat, learning new spells etc. so we felt the next place to go would be to inject lots of personality.

Fargo’s new studio, InXile, licensed Snowblind’s Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance engine to use for their new game.
And rather than a simple remake of one of the old titles, this Bard& is a complete rethinking of not only the original games, but of the RPG genre itself.
Okay, that’s probably the longest and most convoluted run-on sentence I’ve ever written in a review, but you get my point.

 Xbox.com :: The Bard's Tale: First Encounter
Okay, it kind of is—as this is Brian Fargo's sequel, of sorts, to the Bard's Tale game he crafted many years ago—but a lot has changed since then.
Where the original game existed at a time of purity in the RPG genre (a genre that Fargo himself helped create), when everything was new, exciting, interesting, and hadn't been done yet, this new version appears after years of companies crafting all manner of different RPGs.
This new The Bard's Tale both embraces and flies in the face of all these tired mechanisms.

Brian stopped, smiled slightly, and said that InXile wanted to focus on one or two titles at a time and that The Bard's Tale was their main focus at this point, but didn't fully say that a remake of Wasteland would be out of the question.
Fargo posted on RPGCodex a while back where he said that he wouldn't do to Wasteland what he's doing to Bard's Tale.

Interplay, which is controlled by French game publisher Titus Interactive, said in a quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it may take civil action against Brian Fargo.
In his resignation letter, which Interplay included in the filing, Fargo claimed he had been effectively stripped of his responsibilities by Titus executives and that Titus was preventing Interplay from auditing the books of Interplay's European distributor, which Titus also controls.
Interplay said Fargo has improperly engaged in competition with the company by, among other things, soliciting company employees.

News - Interplay sinks to new low // PC /// Eurogamer
Fargo has allegedly been absent without leave ever since Titus took control of the company in a (very) hostile take-over last September, even though he only officially resigned from his post last week.
Now Titus are claiming that he was caught "soliciting company employees" to go and work with him at his new company, which (if true) could be "a breach of his duties" to Interplay.
He hasn't hired anyone from the company [and] he hasn't been competing with the company." Ironically, just a few hours earlier Titus bigwig Herve Caen had said in a press release that "I wish Brian the best of luck in his future endeavors" [sic].
