Atari - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atari develops, publishes and distributes games for all major video game consoles, as well as for the personal computer, and is currently one of the largest third-party publishers of video games in the United States.
The Atari 5200 game console, released as a next-generation follow up to the 2600, was based on the Atari 800 computer (but was incompatible with Atari 800 game cartridges), and its sales never met the company's expectations.
In the meantime, Atari Games was bought out by its employees in 1986, who also founded Tengen to bring their arcade games in to the home.

 ClassicGaming.com - The Museum: Atari 2600
Atari wasn't very happy about having to deal with this new competition (as Atari was the sole producer of VCS games prior to Activision's formation), and at the time they didn't realize that this was the beginning of the end of their software dominance.
The Atari 5200 Supersystem was named for its part number in the Atari catalog, CX5200.
Regardless of some of Atari's mistakes, the 2600 had become so popular and had such a large user base that competitors Coleco and Mattel both released add-on modules to allow their systems to play 2600 games.

The Atari 2600 version of Pac Man was written by Todd Fry who, although he was talented Atari 2600 programmer did not like Pac Man and did a sloppy half-effort of porting the game to the Atari 2600.
Atari had originally planned to sell a total of 10 games for the Atari 2600.
Todd also worked on the Atari Swordquest series and also was putting the finishing touches on an Atari 2600 version of Xevious (a feat of masterful programming since the game was so complex) when Atari was sold, 2600 Xevious was never finished or released.

The games could be played by one, two or four players, the number of players being set by a switch and the number of extra pads connected to the system.
The only difference between the two variants of this one was the way the bricks were destroyed: either the ball bounced on the first brick destroyed, or it continued destroying the bricks without bouncing until an edge of the screen (or the paddle) was reached.
