When the sequel Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn hit the shelves, I, like many other D&D and RPG geeks, could hardly wait to get it home and lose myself in the world Faerun in the Forgotten Realms.
This adherence to D&D resources is what pulls Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn head and shoulders above other so-called "RPGs" which are based on nothing and play like 8-bit adventure games with plots straight out of ElfQuest.
The game takes place not long after Baldur's Gate left off.

The first game in the series had the player character start out as a powerless orphan, raised in the monastery of Candlekeep, to the south of Baldur's Gate and north of the kingdom of Amn.
Although they take place in the Baldur's Gate rendition of the Forgotten Realms setting, they are not often regarded as a part of the Baldur's Gate series, as the plot is unrelated to previous games, and they were console-exclusive titles - never released for Windows and Macintosh as the original games in the series were.

The Avatar Trilogy: The Gods Walk Toril
While the Avatar Trilogy ( Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep) follows the quest of four mortal heroes and involves a handful of Faerûn's gods directly, the power of a god tends to get noticed, and other Forgotten Realms novels and game supplements have revealed the goings-on of many other powers.
For more information about the Time of Troubles and the gods of Faerûn read the Avatar Trilogy of novels, including Shadowdale by Scott Ciencin, Tantras by Jim Lowder, and Waterdeep by Troy Denning, and check out the Faiths and Pantheons game product by Eric L. Boyd and Erik Mona.
The year 1358 DR, the Year of Shadows and the Time of Troubles, also known as the Godswar, the Avatar Crisis, or when gods walked Toril, was the most destructive and disruptive time in Faerûn's recent history.
