Abstract strategy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An abstract strategy game is a board game with perfect information, no chance, and (usually) two players.
In some abstract strategy games there are multiple starting positions of which it is suggested that one be randomly determined: at the very least, in all conventional abstract strategy games a starting player needs to be chosen by some means extrinsic to the game.
The analysis of a “pure” abstract strategy game tends to fall under combinatorial game theory.

Strategy game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strategy games are typically board games, video or computer games with the players' decision-making skills having a high significance in determining the outcome.
Usually applied only to certain computer strategy games, the moniker "real-time strategy" indicates that the action in the game is continuous, and players will have to make their decisions and actions within the backdrop of a constantly changing game state.
Almost all non-computer strategy games are turn-based; however, the personal computer game market trend has lately inclined more towards real-time strategy games.

Essentially, if a winning strategy exists for the second player, then the first player can win the game by stealing this strategy given that he has the advantage of an extra move.
The study of Hex strategy is an attempt to reduce this complexity to a manageable level and tame the game's branching factor by pruning suboptimal choices from the game tree.

 cs497rej: Modeling Abstract Strategy Games
Strategy games are games (often board games) which depend primarily on players' skills to determine the outcome of the game, in opposition to such elements as chance/luck or hidden information.
Abstract strategy games are strategy games which have little or no theme.
Under this definition, games like chess, checkers, and go are abstract strategy games, and Stratego, Risk, and Settlers of Catan are not.

 Defining the Abstract
The games that interest me most are abstract strategy games.
A good abstract game can therefore be thought of as a "family" of potentially interesting logic puzzles, and the play consists of each player posing such a puzzle to the other.
But regardless of such considerations, playing an abstract strategy game is an exercise in logical thought.

I use "abstract game" to mean either "abstract strategy game" or sometimes "themeless game".
Other criteria that are usually applied are that abstract strategy games are for two players only (thus avoiding petty diplomacy) and that the players must alternate turns.
Defining the Abstract.) I believe another criterion that is usually applied is that an abstract strategy game is zero-sum, that is, what one player gains, the other loses; usually there is a single winner and a single loser.

Go - An Ancient Abstract Boardgame of Oriental Strategy
Go is an ancient abstract strategy game which is played on a wooden board consisting of a 19 x 19 matrix using black and white stones.
The rules of the game are extremely simple, easily learned by children in fact, but the intricacies of gameplay can become extremely complex due to the virtually infinite possibilities.
The unfolding of geometrical patterns, the interaction of the basic elements of line and circle, stone and wood, and the meshing of grand-scale opposing strategies make go an artful game.
